Interoception is one of the eight sensory systems (alongside sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, vestibular, and proprioception) and it refers to the body’s internal sensory system—your ability to sense what’s happening inside your body. 🧠 What Does Interoception Help With? Interoception allows you to notice: Hunger or fullness Thirst Need to use the washroom Heart rate changes (e.g., from anxiety or excitement) Body temperature (hot or cold) Pain, nausea, or illness Muscle tension or relaxation Emotional states (like recognizing when you feel scared, sad, or happy) It's like having a built-in dashboard that tells you how your body is doing. --Interoception & Autism / Neurodivergence Many autistic and neurodivergent people experience interoceptive differences: Hypersensitivity: Over-aware of internal signals (e.g., minor pain feels overwhelming). Hyposensitivity: Under-aware of internal cues (e.g., not realizing they need to eat or use the bathroom). Difficulty linking sensations to emotions: May feel something in the body but not connect it to “I’m anxious” or “I’m excited.” This can impact: Emotional regulation Toileting Sleep Self-awareness Safety awareness (e.g., not realizing they’re overheating) How Can You Support Interoception? 1. Build Awareness Through Check-Ins: Use visuals or body charts to label what they’re feeling. Ask gentle questions like: “Is your tummy hungry or full?” or “Is your heart beating fast?” 2. Create Routines: Scheduled bathroom breaks, snack times, water reminders. Consistency helps when signals are hard to detect. 3. Use Body-Based Activities: Mindfulness, yoga, deep pressure, or movement to improve body connection. 4. Teach Emotional Vocabulary: Help connect physical sensations with emotional labels (e.g., “When I feel butterflies in my tummy, that might be nervousness.) #interoception #asd #NeurodivergentSupport #NeurodivergentNeeds #SensorySupport #AutismAwareness #EmotionalRegulation #SupportNotSuppress #BodyAwareness #NeurodiversityEducation #HiddenSenses

Interoception is the ability to be aware of internal sensations in the body, including heart rate, respiration, hunger, fullness, temperature, and pain, as well as emotion sensations. Interceptive signals play a crucial role in signaling hunger, fullness, and energy balance. Dysfunctional hunger signals may lead to cravings for comfort foods or a reliance on food as a source of emotional comfort, rather than satisfying physical hunger cues. Here we have a kiddo who has issues with going to the bathroom and doesn’t feel hungry. Our therapists have developed an activity plan as shown in this video. Activities like these activates the Interoception system as well as works on core muscles. Does your child has any issues with any concerns mentioned above then contact us and we will draw up an activity plan that will support the child . #ableuk #ableukdubai #occupationaltherapy #childdevelopment #sensoryintegrationtherapy #overwhelmedchildren #interoception

elite fighters have a hidden skill: interoception: the ability to sense internal states like heartbeat, breath, and gut tension. dr. andrew huberman explains, “interoception is everything that we sense at the level of our skin and inward”. research shows that athletes with heightened interoceptive awareness can better manage fatigue and maintain performance under pressure. this isn't instinct. it's trained. every time you tune into your body's signals during training, you're sharpening this edge.

People w/ autistim and ADHD may experience difficulties with interoception. This can affect awareness of body sensations like pain, cold, hunger, etc. It can also impact emotional understanding and self regulation.💚 In contrast, some people may have 'hypersensitivity,' making them more sensitive to touch, sight, sound, taste, smell, temperature, etc.💜 It is also possible to have both, many people do.❤️ Have you experienced this?💙 #autistic #adhd

🚨 Interoception as a Demand 🚨 For me, interoception - our ability to sense internal bodily signals, can feel like a set of demands rather than helpful cues. 💭 Feeling hungry, thirsty, or tired? For a PDAer like me, those sensations don’t always feel like my choice. My body is telling me what to do, and that lack of autonomy can make me resist even my own basic needs. 💡 This is why I might ignore hunger until I feel sick, forget to drink water, or push through exhaustion..because responding to those needs feels like following orders instead of making a decision. 🌱 Building a relationship with interoceptive signals takes time, effort, and self-awareness. It’s not as simple as "just listen to your body"—especially when your body feels like it’s working against you. ✨ It has taken me years to be in a conscious, consistent practice of attuning to m needs. ✨ #Neurodivergent #PDA #Interoception #DemandAvoidance #AutisticExperience

Learning about interoception has been such a game changer for me. Both in how I relate to myself, my children, and how I consider my clients experiences. Much of what I’ve learned comes from the work of @kelly_mahler (I can’t recommend her work enough for professionals who work with ADHD and Autistic clients!). If you want more of a deep dive you can see my blog post where I go into more detail or check out my interoception workbook (Alexithymia plus interoception workbook bundle is on sale this week). You can find links to these resources in stories or in my Interoception highlights. 💚 Dr. Neff www.neurodivergent insights.com

Did you know about interoception? It's one of our 8 senses. "Hold up! I thought we had 5 senses." Nope. Interoception helps you monitor the internal state of your body. It helps you understand and feel what's going on inside your joints, muscles, and organs. Are you feeling hungry? Thirsty? Gotta run to the bathroom? Thank your interoception for that. Do you know what else it does? It helps you feel, interpret, and process your emotions. So interoception is important for emotional self-regulation (and co-regulation too). Wanna hear more? It is super common for children who withhold their poo to have very little awareness that they even need to go. This happens because the bowel becomes stretched and the usual body signals that tell us we need the toilet stop working as well. In this reel I explain why awareness is reduced in stool withholders and share two effective strategies you can start using with your child today to support their toileting journey. Tap save so you can come back to this whenever you need and share with anyone who may find this helpful. #toilettraining #childdevelopment #paediatrics #constipationrelief #toilettrainingtips #pooproblems #parentingtips #childrenshealth #pottytraining #kidshealth #interoception #stoolwithholding #pelvicfloorexercises #earlyyears #mumlife #dadlife

Here’s an interesting awareness drill to explore your interoception, which is your ability to notice what’s happening inside your body, one of the core ideas of how we develop embodiment in the Crazy Monkey Practice. Next time between sets try sitting down and placing your full attention on your heartbeat. Where in your body do you sense it most. How subtle or strong does it feel. Can you follow its rhythm. You might notice it changing as you recover. This kind of practice may help you become more aware of your internal state. Which can support things like focus self-regulation or clarity in decisions. It’s okay if it feels challenging at first. Start with just a minute or two and see what you notice. Curious to go deeper? The next Sentiõ workshop is on Saturday July 26th from 2PM to 5PM at the studio. You can sign up via the link in bio or send me a DM. From @neurodivergent_insights: ADHD #hyperfixation plus poor #interoception can be a real beast. 💚 Many #ADHD and #Autistic folks forget to eat, go to the bathroom and take care of basic bodily things. Particularly when hyper-fixated many don’t get the initial cues (initial hunger cues, thirst cues etc.) and often don’t know their body needs something until their secondary cues (low blood sugar) or urgency kicks in. 💚 This is one thing that can contribute to irritability and emotional dysregulation. When our bodies are out of rhythms our emotions tend to follow. 💫Shout out to son Mark who created the idea of this reel (he’s a producer in the making). 🌈 Dr. Neff
