As this difference builds up, the electric field becomes strong enough to ionize the air, turning it into plasma, a conductive path for electricity. Once the field strength exceeds the dielectric breakdown of air (around 3 million volts per meter), a massive electrical discharge occurs that we call "Lightning". This sudden movement of charge is called electrostatic discharge, and the patterns it forms are called Lichtenberg figures, and they mimic the fractal, branching paths of real lightning.
