The summit was attended by leaders from 46 countries and also featured His Highness Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, investor Ray Dalio, and venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya. He said Gen-Z is often wrongly labeled as lazy. Instead, he argued that young people are willing to work hard but reject work they see as meaningless. He said this generation has seen burnout become normal, loyalty go unrewarded, and job titles take priority over real progress. Shamani also challenged common stereotypes about Gen-Z’s work habits. He said many young people care less about money than previous generations and actively learn new skills outside their formal roles. He added that job-hopping is not new, but is now more visible due to social media and digital platforms. He said many middle-management roles today offer greater responsibility but limited financial reward and job security, discouraging young professionals from pursuing leadership positions. So buyers think: “What if I buy now and then get laid off? I’ll lose the house.” Here’s the truth: That’s a legitimate concern. But it’s not a reason to paralyze yourself. Here’s why: If you lose your job before buying, you can’t get approved anyway. Lenders check employment history. If you lose your job after buying (6-12 months in), here’s what actually happens: 1. You have unemployment benefits (typically 50% of income) 2. You have an emergency fund (you built one, right?) 3. You have time to find a new job (average 3-6 months) 4. Your mortgage payment doesn’t change Real scenario: You lose your job. Draw unemployment. Get new job in 4 months. You’ve lost 2-3 months income. Painful, but survivable. Without a house: You’re also losing your job AND paying rent to someone else. Same financial hit. But you’re building their equity, not yours. Risk management: Build 6-month emergency fund BEFORE buying (non-negotiable) Budget for job transition periods (3-month gap) Keep your skills sharp (ongoing learning) Don’t buy at the top of your budget (leave buffer room) If you do all four? Your ability to see patterns across fields and connect dots? That’s what no model can replicate. Claude agrees 🫡 OLD RULE 2: Do great work and you’ll be rewarded. Keep your head down. NEW RULE: Visibility over output. People surviving layoffs aren’t just the best performers, they’re the ones known inside AND outside the company. Advocating for yourself isn’t arrogance, staying invisible is the real risk. OLD RULE 3: Master technical skills. Be the expert. NEW RULE: Double down on what AI can’t do.
