Mechanical Shutter vs LEAF shutter. You might be surprised to learn that not all cameras use a rolling (focal plane) shutter. Some cameras with built-in lenses have the shutter set in front of the aperture. This means the shutter can be smaller, quieter, and faster. So why don't all cameras have a leaf shutter? Simple... They would be waaaay more expensive. If you wanted an interchangeable lens camera to have a leaf shutter, you would have to put a shutter inside each and every lens. For obvious reasons this gets expensive and is very impractical. #learnphotography #cameras #phototips #agphotog #fujix100vi #camera #photography #leafshutter @fujifilmx_ca @fujifilmx_us

This is why Hasselblad cameras (and lenses) are so unique. The shutter mechanism is unlike anything you'll find in your everyday full frame camera. Instead Hasselblad cameras use a uniquely designed Leaf Shutter that contributes to some very special characteristics of the photos you end up capturing. Leaf shutter lenses, often found in medium format and high-end compact cameras, create stunning hexagonal lens flares. These distinctive shapes stem from the shutter’s blade pattern interacting with bright light sources, adding an extra layer of visual interest and depth to a scene. 📷 907X & CFV100C #hasselblad #907X

Alright guys, today we have a legendary camera that blurs the line between large and medium format — the 1985 Fuji G617. It comes fitted in this custom leather briefcase, let’s take it out and shoot a whole roll of 120 — just 4 frames — with this panoramic leviathan. If the Fuji GW690 is the “Texas Leica” is the G617 the “Alaska Leica?” Of course it has no rangefinder, but the G617 does handle just like a scaled-up version of the GW690, from the body texture to the advance lever and front-mounted shutter release. The G617 sets itself apart with its fixed 105mm f8 Fujinon SW lens, which has a leaf shutter with speeds to 1/500th and aperture all the way to f45. Focus throw is very short and runs to just 3m close focus, and the entire lens assembly is protected by this roll cage with integrated bubble level. The camera is fitted with two cold shoes for mounting rangefinders and light meters, and opening the back exposes the massive 6x17cm film gate. The G617 makes (4x) 6x17 exposures on 120 roll film, so while it uses medium format rolls, its image area is nearly as large as 4x5 sheet film. As with its smaller siblings, align the arrow with the start marks on the film gate and close the back. The G617 does automatically count frames, but requires as many as four strokes of the advance lever for each frame due to the huge image size. The G617 is capable of shooting 220. With our film loaded, we compose with the expansive viewfinder, and make our first image. Getting just four photos per roll does force you to be selective, but the Fuji G617 is an eager machine, constantly encouraging you on to load another roll with its easy handling. And once you’ve seen the incredible clarity, sharpness, and detail this camera records on its immense negatives first hand, it can be hard to return to smaller formats. #fujig617 #fuji #g617 #6x17 #6x17camera #6x17panoramic #film #mediumformatfilm #mediumformat #mediumformatcamera #120film #panorama #analog #filmcamera #kodak #kodakprofessional #review #kodakgold200 #asmr #unboxing #1980s

The hype. The X100VI. 📸 Is it worth it? I’ve used this camera for over a year. Here’s my thoughts: What I love about it? 👉 40MP fixed compact lens: Allows me to zoom a bit, crop images. Best quality images. 👉 ND filter: helps in bright day light to lower aperture 👉 Leaf shutter: Absolutely quiet 👉Optical & Electronic viewfinder: makes the camera enjoyable to use. Allows you to frame photos better 👉 The film simulations: no more editing in Lightroom! 👉 Perfect everyday carry or for travel What I don’t like? (small list) - single slot for SD card - not 100% weather sealed right out the box - High cost Is it worth it? For me, YES! 100% 😍 It has made me a better photographer, given me so many beautiful moments to look back at, the film simulations have been a joy to use. It’s basically a dream camera if I were to create one. Depending on your budget and case, it may or may not be. But that’s for you to decide. check out my other reels where I go into details. 🤝 Follow for lots more Fujifilm content 🙏 Share this with a Fuji friend. #fujifilmx100vi #fujifeed #x100vi #x100vifujifilm #fujix100vi #fujiglobal #fujifilmuk

You all know I like my weird and uncommon cameras, and this one was very high up my list, the Graflex Graphic 35 Jet. Made in 1961 by Kowa in Japan for Graflex in the US, it featured a leaf shutter, film plane focusing, front shutter lever and.... a CO₂ cartridge powered film advance! You read that right, it uses CO₂ to advance the film and cock the shutter! Didn't last too long and they ended up 'neutering' these cameras very quickly. Very rare to still find one with open cartridge holder! Bonus: this one still has its original gas cartridge. Not exactly practical, but definitely worth adding to the collection. #graflex #graphic35jet #vintagecamera #weirdcameras #filmcamera #35mmfilm #cameracollection #shootfilmstaybroke #filmcommunity #analoguepeople #collectfilm #retrodesign #filmgear #keepfilmalive #mechanicalmarvels #graflexcamera #cameracollector #35mm #35mmfilm #35mmfilmphotography #35mmfilmphoto

The sheer hubris and ingenuity it took to conceive of, let alone develop and produce a camera like this is truly remarkable. The @hasselblad 1000f is the second production model the company released - while we are most familiar with the 500 “V” series cameras that operate around a leaf shutter located within the lens, and rear auxiliary shutter or “baffle” to protect the film during composition, the earliest Hasselblads operated around horizontally traveling focal plane shutters made of metal (fancy foil if we are being honest). When the camera is advanced, three main gears + two drive shafts achieve 3 main tasks: recharge the shutter, recharge the mirror, and transport the film. All in the 360° rotation of the advance knob (doubling as your speed selector dial). The coolest part of these cameras is the slow speed operation - most slow speed escapements operate on the same principal: use enough reduced gear ratios to route the mechanical energy of the second curtain’s spring tension into a single shaft or gear, apply some type of predictable (and adjustable) drag to that shaft and then you can control the rate at which that mechanical energy is released. In the case of this camera’s slow speed governor, the method of drag chosen is air resistance. At the end of the system is an axel with two small aluminum fins crimped in place. The surface area and rate of rotation of these fins produces a fixed amount of resistance allowing the shutter sequence to predictably and consistently expire each cycle. FASCINATING 🤯 Another fun aspect of these cameras is that the metal shutter curtains are highly conductive to sound - you can hear the clicks travel through the camera’s structure and across the membrane of the shutter 😌 These early Hasselblads were delicate and prone to issues when any of these systems were bumped or thrown out of calibration. The subsequent use of the leaf shutter in the lens simplified the camera considerably. The 1000f and the earlier 1600f laid the groundwork for what would become the most dominant medium format “system” camera of the 20th century. Neat. @hasselblad #hasselblad #rjrepairs #mediumformat #film @smartereveryday

Perfect when you want to be present, not tweaking settings every 5 seconds. Then there’s the X-E5, lighter, flexible, and ready to adapt.
