During the mid-1800s, millions left Ireland in search of survival and opportunity. Poverty, hunger, and political hardship forced families to leave everything familiar. Their courage created new beginnings across the United States. Their story reminds us that resilience often grows from unimaginable hardship. Call to Action Research your family heritage and reflect on the strength of those who came before you. #IrishHistory #ImmigrantStories #Resilience #FamilyHeritage #MarchLearning Highly recommend reading "A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America by Ronald Takaki, professor in the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of California, Berkeley

My family didn't mean to come here, but we had no other choice. And I think of them every time I advocate for the rights of immigrants. they called my family drunks, hung signs that said 'no Irish need apply' and accused them of being part of a papist plot to make America a Catholic Nation. I would never turn around and do that to someone else. #books #ninewaves #writer #writersofinstagram #writing

I decided this year to finally finish the books on my shelf that built up over the years, then move to new ones I've been eyeing. Getting back to reading was easier and felt better than making overrated New Years resolutions, because who is motivated to be active in winter?! 1. Beyond Ethnic Loneliness: The Pain of Marginalization and the Path to Belonging by @prasantaverma details her family's story of discrimination and forced assimilation as Indian immigrants living in the Southern United States, along with history, research, spiritual principles, and end-of-chapter prompts and poetry encouraging you to explore your relationship to othering and belonging in America 2. Harvesting Freedom: The Life of a Migrant Worker in Canada by Gabriel Alladua. Canada was always glorified in St. Lucia as diverse, economically booming, and inclusive. But when Gabriel joined a seasonal Canadian farming program, he experienced a completely different reality, and not for the better. 3. My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by @resmaamenakem A companion (or alternative) to The Body Keeps Score, discussing intergenerational trauma in Black, White, and Police Bodies dating back to Medieval Times, and how trauma and toxic stress can present as culture, personality, and physical and psychiatric illnesses. Paired with exercises to address your internal biases, honor your ancestors, and feel calm in your body. 4. You're the Only One I've Told: The Stories Behind Abortion by @mjshah8 is an anthology about several women who had abortions by 2020, written by a Chief Medical Officer of a NY Planned Parenthood #bookstagram #nonfictionreads #bipocauthors #pocauthors #2026reads
