the ☝🏻tool you’ll wish you’d known sooner! A new reader will see a word that they’ve never seen before each time they read. This is just the reality for someone just learning the language. What starts as a step by step process to turn the word into smaller, decodable parts becomes automatic! 🙌🏻 Because VCCV is the most common pattern in the language, we teach that one first! It will be the skill that takes your child from one syllable words to two or more ❤️ Here’s some 2 syllable words to start with if you’re ready to teach this to your child for the first time: rabbit muffin sunset magnet picnic sudden traffic tennis (just comment MANUAL if you’d like to use my go-to resources to teach children this way! I’ll send you the link ☺️)

2 very different books, 2 different ages… but just ONE book study guide! Picture Book Study – Brambly Hedge: Spring Story (with my 7-year-old): We started with a simple vocab matching activity using @jackandlinktoys, then read the first page of Brambly Hedge. We paused there because it was the perfect opportunity to introduce identifying the setting. I had him highlight the time, place, and descriptive words in different colors, which made it really click for him. After finishing the story, I had a copywork sentence ready to go. The day before, he had learned about punctuation and capitalization in his formal LA curriculum, so I had him identify and highlight the capital letter at the beginning and the period at the end of his sentence. We wrapped it up with a fun triorama activity! During the lesson, we mapped out where Wilfred went and the different homes he visited. He chose to draw his favorite scene, Crabapple Cottage! Novel Study – Redwall (with my 10-year-old): For Redwall, this was actually two different lessons. We started with vocabulary matching using @jackandlinktoys then moved into an alliteration analysis using four different sentences. From there, he practiced spelling and used his vocabulary words in his own sentences. In another lesson, we also worked through a What I Know / What I Wonder worksheet to build engagement and curiosity before diving into the next book in the novel. We finished the lesson with passage analysis where he focused on identifying simile, personification, proper nouns, and adverbs. One guide, multiple ages, endless ways to use it, exactly why I created it! ✨Don’t forget it’s 10% off for one week only! All my phonics reels in one place 📚 My 20-month-old mastered phonics sounds… Soon he started segmenting and blending. Then came phonics rules — and by 3.5 years old, he was reading all his books by himself. At 5, he graduated to novels. He is 9 now… and the first thing he does every morning is pick up a book. He cannot eat without a book. Sometimes he even forgets to eat because he gets so absorbed in reading. I know it sounds weird — but I actually have to ask him to close the book (and it takes a lot of effort 😅). People who have known us from the beginning know how much we truly love books. ❤️ P.S - the song might not be appropriate but aur kuch samjh nahi aaya 😁

I found the right level — and finally spoke. In my 30s, living abroad, I got stuck. So I asked a mom at a bookstore. She showed me the dictionary her child used — an 8-year-old level. That changed everything. ✔Right level → you SPEAK ✘ Wrong level → you FREEZE I tell my child the same: Don’t be embarrassed to ask. Don’t wait for a teacher — someone right next to you might know exactly what you need. Ask. Match your level, not your age. Courage beats skill. Would you ask a stranger? 👇 YES / NO Mom hack. More coming. 💾 #languagelearning #nycmomlife #bilingualkids #learnthroughlife #IGReelsChallenge

I will always celebrate a child reading anything. Whether it is a graphic novel, a cartoon diary, or a TV show spin-off — if they are reading, they are winning. 📚💛 But as an English teacher, I also know that if we want our children to become confident, capable writers, we need to make sure they are exposed to books that model specific writing skills. You do not need to take away the books they love! Just use their current favourites as a bridge to introduce books that will actively improve their writing: 📖 If they love TV character books (Ages 5-7): Add Possum Magic. It uses rich, lyrical Australian language that introduces genuinely new vocabulary they won’t hear on TV. 📖 If they love Dog Man (Ages 7-9): Add Charlotte’s Web. Graphic novels are great, but Charlotte’s Web contains over 100 “rare” vocabulary words and models how to paint a picture with prose, not just look at one. 📖 If they love Wimpy Kid (Ages 8-10): Add Matilda. Roald Dahl is a masterclass in descriptive language. He teaches children how to use powerful adjectives and adverbs to make characters leap off the page. 📖 If they love The Treehouse Series (Ages 9-11): Add Wonder. The Treehouse books are hilarious and episodic. Wonder teaches children how to write from different perspectives and builds deep emotional vocabulary for their own narratives. 📖 If they love Geronimo Stilton (Ages 10-12): Add Hatchet. Hatchet is packed with incredible figurative language — similes, metaphors, and personification — that models exactly how to write tension and suspense for upper primary assessments. A balanced reading diet creates beautiful writers.

Before they start writing a story, have them consider their characters mood in their opening (happy, excited, sad, scared) and have them create the following three brainstorms: - 1: ADJECTIVES to describe that mood. Look for as many synonyms as they can (a thesaurus is a great tool here) - 2: Think about how a person feeling that way thinks, acts and behaves. Think about all the things they are going to do and brainstorm the VERBS choices that best reflect how they are doing them (eg instead of walking-they could be marching, ambling, pacing, dawdling depending on mood) - 3: Now think about the ADVERBS to describe those verbs-again as many synonyms as possible and use the thesaurus here - And now you have a language bank that shows considered langauge choices that work together to consciously create a mood/tone! Let me know if you try this and it works for you, and as always check out my resources (and free sample) via the link in my bio #homeeducation #homeeducator #education
