GSICYMI: This week, Georgia State University Special Collections and Archives hosted the opening reception for “The Phoenix Rises: Atlanta’s Olympic Journey” exhibit, which included an engaging panel discussion commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games.
Panelists shared personal accounts of their hands-on work during the Games, from supporting athletes in the Olympic Village to serving in key roles at GSU and the former Georgia Dome.
The conversation also examined Atlanta’s political and cultural transformation during the lead-up to the Games, as well as global perspectives from Greece, which was long assumed to be the natural host for the 1996 Olympics.
Attendees also got an up-close look at one-of-a-kind Olympic memorabilia.
The discussion provided an insightful look at how Atlanta’s Olympic moment reshaped not only the city, but GSU as well.
