In 1966, MIT researcher Joseph Weizenbaum created Eliza, one of the first chatbots designed to simulate human conversation. Eliza didn’t really understand language; it responded to users based on keyword patterns, giving the illusion of comprehension. The program was written in LISP, a programming language designed for artificial intelligence that allows symbolic processing and manipulation of words, making it ideal for early natural language experiments. Eliza created the “Eliza Effect”: the tendency to attribute understanding and empathy to a machine that has none. This short explores the technical side of Eliza AI and why humans are still fascinated by AI conversations today.
