As you guys know from my last video, yesterday we found a HARLEQUIN BEETLE!!! Acrocinus longimanus. It is one of my favorite insects of all time, that I have wanted to see forever. But the harlequin beetle came with a surprise: hiding under its elytra were many pseudoscorpions! They are sometimes phoretic, aka neutral relationship, and sometimes symbiotic. This may actually be a symbiotic relationship here, because large Cerambycids often have mites on them, so the pseudoscorps will live on them and eat off their parasites. What do you think? #entomology #harlequinbeetle

As sit and wait ambush predators, orchid mantids aren't the most mobile insects. So, when they need to get from place to place, they hop on the millipede train as seen in this vid from @bugsincyberspace . Able to traverse rocky terrain with their waves undulations, millipedes can easily maneuver around rough environments. Although slow, it gets the job done. Unlike their centipede counterparts, millipedes are actually detritvores and primarily feed on an array of organic material such as lead litter. This means that fortunately for the passenger, these lumbering giants aren't carnivores. While the flowery mantis is in fact carnivorous, they only prey upon smaller insects and would be unable to break through the tough hide of a millipede. Check out @bugsincyberspace for more!

I learned my lesson, never try to pick up a giant water bug. I have always heard people claiming that their bite is extremely painful, but actually, the bite itself is not the worst part. Though obviously it does hurt a bit, it’s the swelling and itching you experience the next day which is the most excruciating. Giant water bugs, also known as “toe biters” are Hemipterans in the family Belostomatidae. They are aquatic predatory insects, usually found in ponds and other still bodies of water. The nymphs feed on aquatic arthropods and small fish. They use their piercing, sucking mouthparts to inject venom into their prey to paralyze them, then suck the liquids out. They will also use their venom to defend themselves. The adults leave the water and fly to find mates and disperse. After mating, the female lays her eggs on the male’s wings to protect them before they hatch. It’s really cool finding males with eggs on their back! There are many species of Belostomatids, and various sizes. This species is one of the largest, Lethocerus maximus. #belostomatidae #entomology #entomologist #insects #insect #bugs

The Atlas beetle (Chalcosoma atlas) is a very large species of beetle in the family Scarabaeidae, found in Southeast Asia. Males have three prominent horns. The species is named for Atlas, the giant of Greek mythology who supported the skies. Chalcosoma atlas, like other beetles of the genus Chalcosoma, is remarkable for its size. As is common in the Scarabaeidae, males are larger than the females, reaching a length of about 60–120 millimetres (2.4–4.7 in); females are about 25–60 millimetres (0.98–2.36 in). Males have specialised horns on their head and thorax that they use to fight with each other, to gain mating rights with females. The Atlas beetle differs from other Chalcosoma species (such as C. caucasus) by the broader end of the cephalic (head) horn.
