Held at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in California, this set occurred just four months after the release of their diamond-certified album, Dookie. This live rendition was delivered faster and looser than the studio recording, mirroring the “rowdy energy” of the crowd and the band’s sudden rise to fame. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt were only 22 years old, while Tré Cool was 21. “Longview” was the third song in a high-octane five-song set that also included “Welcome to Paradise,” “Chump,” “Basket Case,” and “2000 Light Years Away”. At the time of this show, “Longview” had recently become the band’s first single to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. This era of live shows is credited with bringing punk rock into the mainstream, moving the band from Berkeley’s underground 924 Gilman Street scene to massive outdoor amphitheatres.
