LCM or HCF? 🤯 If you’ve ever guessed, this reel is for you. Most students don’t lose marks because they can’t find LCM or HCF. They lose marks because they don’t know WHICH one to use in word problems. So here’s a simple 3-step process 👇 🔹 Understand the question 🔹 Filter the information 🔹 Choose the right tool No shortcuts. No memorising tricks. Just clear thinking 💾 Save this for exams 👩‍🏫 Parents: this is how you should teach, not rush 🎒 Students: use this for EVERY word problem #math #wordproblems #middleschoolmath #numeracy #mariamspeaksmath

Check your answer ⬇️⬇️⬇️ The correct answer is 12 because the Highest Common Factor of 24 and 36 is 12. HCF word problems are NOT about calculation. They’re about choosing the right tool. 🔧 Most students actually know how to find HCF. But in exams? They panic and pick LCM. So remember this 👇 🔹 Together / repeat → LCM 🔹 Divide / share / maximum → HCF In today’s problem, the keywords were: “equal groups” + “maximum number” That’s your clue. That’s your tool. No guessing. No memorising tricks. Just clear thinking. 💾 Save this before exams 👩‍🏫 Parents — teach the logic, not just the method 🎒 Students — use this 3-step approach every time #math #hcf #lcm #wordproblems #mariamspeaksmath

Word problems don’t require faster thinking. They require clear entry. If you (or your child): • understand concepts • know formulas • but freeze during word problems This 3-step entry method changes the way you approach the question — and that changes the result. Read → Filter → Choose Confidence starts there. Save this. Try it on the next word problem. Reel 3 coming next 👀 #wordproblems #learnmath #math #middleschoolmath #mariamspeaksmath

Most people look at 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 and see squares. Mathematicians look at the same sequence and see something hiding underneath. Subtract consecutive terms and you get 3, 5, 7, 9 - the odd numbers, marching in perfect order. Go one level deeper and subtract those, and you always get 2. Every time. No exceptions. Patterns inside patterns inside patterns. This is what I want every student to experience. The moment when math stops being a subject and starts feeling like a mystery you actually want to solve. Because that curiosity? That’s where real mathematical thinking begins. Try it yourself! Can you predict the next term without squaring? 🔢 Drop your answer below and tag someone who loves a good pattern! #mathematics #sequence #pattern #numbers #mariamspeaksmath

The expression 8 / 2(2+2) is basically the math version of a “trick question.” It’s poorly written because it’s intentionally blurry; using a slanted division slash (/) right next to parentheses creates a bit of a tug-of-war. Most modern textbooks and calculators follow the left-to-right rule, where you divide first and then multiply, giving you 16. However, some people were taught a rule called juxtaposition, where numbers “stuck” to a parenthesis get priority, which would lead to 1. Here is a quick “Cheat Sheet” you can save or share with students to help them avoid the common traps of ambiguous math. 🛑 The “Bad Math” Cheat Sheet Goal: Never let a teacher (or a calculator) misunderstand your work. 1. The “Invisible” Multiplication Trap When you see a number stuck to a parenthesis, like 2(4), it’s called juxtaposition. • The Risk: Some people think this means “do this first,” while others treat it as a regular multiplication. • The Fix: Use a clear multiplication symbol (x) or a dot (*) to show it has the same priority as division. • Instead of: 8 / 2(4) • Write: (8 / 2) x 4 2. The Slanted Slash ‘/‘ vs. The Fraction Bar The slanted slash is the biggest culprit in math arguments because it doesn’t clearly show where the “bottom” of the fraction ends. • The Risk: Does 1 / 2x mean (1/2)x or (1/2x)? No one knows! • The Fix: Always use a horizontal fraction bar. It acts like a “fence” that keeps the top and bottom separated. 3. The “Safety Net” Parentheses When in doubt, wrap it up! Parentheses are the only way to “force” a calculator or a person to do math in the order you intended. • To get 16: (8 / 2)(2 + 2) • To get 1: 8 / (2(2 + 2)) Now you know! Save this for later. #mathematics #middleschoolmath #pemdas #algebra #mariamspeaksmath

Fast at mental math ≠ good at math. These are two completely different things — and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes parents make. Math is a subject of logic. The numbers are just the medium. And the further your child goes, the less the numbers matter and the more the reasoning does. At grade 9, 10, 11 — exams stop testing speed and start testing thought. A child trained only to calculate will hit that wall. Not because they aren’t capable. But because we trained the wrong muscle. The question isn’t how fast they calculate. It’s whether they can think. 🧮 #mathematics #mentalmath #speed #logic #mariamspeaksmath

Division of fractions is one of those topics where students follow the rule without ever understanding it. “Flip and multiply”. Every child knows it, but almost none can explain why it works. The reason is beautifully simple. Dividing by a fraction is really asking - how many of these pieces fit into that number? Dividing by ¼ is identical to asking how many quarters fit into your number, which is exactly the same as multiplying by 4. The rule isn’t arbitrary, it’s a shortcut for something deeply logical. Once your child understands the reasoning behind the rule, they’ll never forget it. Save this today. #fractions #division #arithmetic #math #mariamspeaksmath

Ratio problems are where so many students lose marks, not because the maths is difficult, but because they misread what the numbers actually represent. When two people share money in a ratio and one receives more than the other, the difference between them is not one part of the ratio. It is the gap between parts. This single misunderstanding causes students to divide incorrectly and arrive at a completely wrong answer with total confidence. The fix is simple but powerful - always find the value of one part first. Once you know what one part is worth, the entire problem unravels in seconds. Save this before your next maths exam. #mathematics #middleschoolmath #ratio #proportion #mariamspeaksmath

Word problems are the most misunderstood part of school maths and the reason is not what most people think. Students who struggle with word problems are not weak at maths. They are weak at reading mathematical language, which is an entirely different skill. A child can solve 36 divided by 4 instantly, but freeze when the exact same calculation is wrapped in a story. The maths hasn’t changed, only the packaging has. Yet schools consistently label these children as poor maths students, when what they actually need is to be taught how to strip a sentence down to its mathematical core. These are two separate skills. Only one is being taught. Check out the reel in my highlights that shows you a simple three step process on how to solve any word problem. Follow for math concepts made simple. #mathmatics #wordproblems #dailymath #middleschoolmath #mariamspeaksmath

“3 out of 4.” Or “parts of a whole”. It’s how almost all of us learned fractions. And it’s actually a wonderful introduction. It’s simple, visual, easy to grasp for young learners. But here’s what nobody tells you: that definition has a ceiling. The moment fractions get more complex such as unlike denominators, multiplication, division then suddenly the “parts of a whole” or the “3 out of 4” stops being helpful. And kids who were perfectly fine with fractions suddenly feel lost. Not because they’ve gotten worse at math. But because their understanding needs to level up. The shift is simple: the denominator defines the unit. The numerator counts it. 3/4 is 3 pieces of size one-fourth; not 3 out of 4. Same fraction. Deeper understanding. Completely different results. 💛 Save this 👆it’s the perspective shift that changes everything. #fractions #mathematics #arithmetic #parts #mariamspeaksmath

@mariam_speaks_math
Fractions are one of the most misunderstood topics in primary school maths, and this one mistake is the reason why. When students add fractions like ½ and ⅓, they often add both the numerators AND the denominators separately, getting 2/5 instead of the correct answer, 5/6. This happens because nobody explains what a denominator actually represents. The denominator tells you the SIZE of each piece. You simply cannot add pieces of different sizes without making them equal first. This is the foundation of fraction addition and without it, every fraction sum your child attempts is built on shaky ground. Save this for your child tonight. #mathmatics #fractions #middleschoolmath #learnmath #mariamspeaksmath
