JAThis is Biscuit the tardigrade, one of my favorite individuals I’ve ever recorded. 🥹

I name my tardigrades because I love watching their little lives unfold on my slides in humidity chambers. I keep them happy and thriving on these slides, and observe the whole life of individuals. Naming them has always been my quiet tribute to my only hero, Jane Goodall.
.
They always start off clumsy on the smooth glass, then by the next day they’re sprinting once a thin biofilm of bacteria forms, giving them traction. They zoom around nonstop like my cats before they visit their litter box. 😂I probably take better care of my tardigrades than I do of myself. They’re a huge comfort for me. Maybe that’s not so strange for someone whose whole life revolves around the microscopic.

Clips of Biscuit even appear in the short film about my life, A Body Called Life, which went on to win so many awards and was even longlisted for an Oscar. 😭Such big achievements for such tiny and insignificant things, neither Biscuit nor I, can truly comprehend it.

I hope to bring y'all better, more interesting videos and maybe you'll notice the difference in today's post.
Anyways, this time we're looking at an algae called Volvox. 🔬
I've been wanting to do a video on Volvox for a while, but finally have the equipment to do it justice.
Volvox are actually colonies of hundreds to thousands of smaller cells that work together to do lots of things.
Some are moving the colony towards a light source for photosynthesis, some are making the food, and others are reproducing.
You can find them in places like freshwater ponds that get plenty of sunlight.
They are super fragile and need steady conditions to thrive.

DEI missed my opportunity to post this bleeding algae on Halloween (it’s unfortunately not actually bleeding)!
I found some interesting dark globs of Cyanobacteria growing on the air tube in my stock tank. These globs were shiny and nearly black…until you crushed them. Then they released a deep red pigment. There wasn’t much living inside those mats, but the life on and around them kept me busy: Lacrymaria, Stentor, Dileptus, a few flagellates I didn’t bother trying to identify because I know my limits, some Euglenoids, and a rotifer from the family Notommatidae. It’s one of those samples that reminds me why I love microscopy.

MI🇬🇧The green paramecium, Paramecium bursaria is a species of protozoan ciliate that has a symbiotic mutualism with a green microalga called zoochlorella, the green alga Chlorella.
The microalgae live inside the Paramecium bursaria paramecium, in its cytoplasm by endosymbiosis, and the zoochlorella provide food, while the paramecium provides the algae with both movement and protection.
Note the cytoplasmic movement inside the ciliate.
🇫🇷La paramécie verte, Paramecium bursaria est une espèce de cilié protozoaire qui a un mutualisme symbiotique en relation avec une microalgue verte appelée zoochlorelle, l’algue verte Chlorella.
Les microalgues vivent à l’intérieur de la paramécie Paramecium bursaria, dans son cytoplasme par endosymbiose et les zoochlorelles fournissent de la nourriture, tandis que la paramécie fournit aux algues à la fois le mouvement et la protection.
