With 31 notes per octave, all of our familiar modes can become double modes! Double modes allow us to leverage the shimmer quality implicit within the falling diesis. We can use it as a momentary effect like a chorus pedal or something approximating gamelan ombak tuning to highlight certain moments in a piece of music, or we can use it structurally to create truly mind-blowing microtonal harmonies, which through a double modal framework, allows us to go freewheeling through a landscape of unexplored tonalities. Todays exploration looks to double Phrygian and all the chords available to it. Enjoy the weird sounds, we welcome you with open arms and a whole lot of notes. . . . #musictheory #classicalmusic #bass #bassist #bassplayerunited #talentedmusician #bassplayeruniverse #fretless #fretlessbass #scottsbasslessons #musictheoryclass #musiclesson #musicteacher #musiceducator #musiceducation #microtone #microtonal #microtonality #xenharmonics #xenharmonic #harmony #counterpoint #jazz #jazztheory #jazzharmony #31edo #bassistsofinstagram #composersofinstagram #metalbass #musiced

Amelia Huff + Lumatone = Brain Tingles 🌈 Today we’ve released a new full performance as part of the Lumatone Artist Series featuring our friend and future legend Amelia Huff / @digital.harmonic. In this performance, Amelia uses one of her favorite tunings on Lumatone — a “near-equal just intonation” tuning (12-NEJI) — to masterfully create a fully improvised piece of music called Spiritual Bells. All on the spot. It was thrilling to watch it happen, and now it’s here for all of you to be part of. Stay tuned for more magic to come. #microtonal #microtonality #lumatone #ameliahuff #zheannaErose #isomorphic #keyboardist #keyboardplayer #improvisedmusic #musicproducer #midicontroller

Changing register is one of the easiest ways to create a sense of contrast. The microtonality makes the suspensions lean with more tension, creating, in my opinion, a stronger sense of tension and release.

Georg Friedrich Haas is often described through darkness, microtonality, or spectralism, but what truly defines his music is how perception itself becomes the subject. His work doesn’t aim to illustrate ideas or systems; it places the listener inside unstable acoustic situations where orientation, memory, and expectation are constantly challenged. One of Haas’s most radical gestures is the use of darkness — not as theatre, but as a perceptual tool. In pieces like in vain or the Third String Quartet, removing light strips away visual hierarchy and forces the ear to navigate space differently. Sound becomes spatial, tactile, even threatening at first, until fear gives way to heightened attention. Listening turns into an embodied act. Haas’s relationship to harmony is equally physical. Microtonality, for him, is not an ideology or a claim to “natural” purity. It is a means of intensifying sensation: rough, noisy low spectra pushed to their limits, followed by moments where overtone fields bloom into luminous, almost unreal clarity. Beauty and noise are not opposites here, but phases of the same material. What sets Haas apart is that none of this remains abstract. His music openly embraces emotional intensity, historical memory, and even failure. Moments of transcendence appear — and collapse. Utopias flicker and disappear. As Alex Ross observed, Haas doesn’t offer consolation: he suggests that whatever truth music can reach, it passes first through darkness. ⚠️ All images and sounds used here are for educational and illustrative purposes only. One of the most magical features of Arabic music is its microtonality — the notes that live between the cracks.✨ They’re not just decorative. They’re part of the core musical alphabet, and they hold the key to reaching the highest state in Arabic music: Tarab. 🎶 In my recent lecture at Cambridge University, I shared how microtonality works. At first, these notes might sound strange to your ears. But here are 3 ways to start getting them under your skin: 1️⃣ Listen widely – immerse yourself in Arabic classical music until this sound world feels like home. 2️⃣ Don’t isolate them – microtones aren’t meant to float on their own. Practice them in context, in relation to the notes before and after. This is where maqam knowledge is essential. 3️⃣ Sing them within the maqam – internalize them inside the system they belong to, so they move from theory into your body. 🎁 If you’re a musician, producer, composer, or vocalist, I’ve created a free Maqam Guide with 7 essential steps to help you unlock the Arabic maqam system. It’s in the link in bio. 💃 And if you’re a belly dancer or raqs sharqi artist looking to deepen your connection to the music, there’s a separate guide just for you — it’s called Feel the Music, and you’ll find that in the bio as well. Quartertones aren’t obstacles — and they’re definitely not optional. Wanting to understand Arabic music without them is like wanting to learn Arabic… but skipping one of the letters because you can’t pronounce it yet. 🙃 #ArabicMusic #Maqam #Microtonality #Tarab #MiddleEasternMusic #CambridgeUniversity #Qanun #MusiciansOfInstagram #BellyDance #raqssharqi

so in love with this instrument, handcrafted especially for me by @gordiystarukh , feeling endlessly grateful ♡ it’s not that easy to learn to play; sometimes you can hear when i don’t press fully down with my left-hand fingers, that characteristic sound—but that’s the whole charm. and this microtonality♡… of course i added some fx, but still… can’t get enough of this sound. expect a lot of this instrument on the new album ^^ #hurdygurdy
