He cited concrete examples, like Singapore Airlines' attempts to partner with the Tata Group in earlier decades being blocked by political sensitivities and the protection of Air India, prioritising symbolism and vested interests over efficiency and national benefit.
Such issues were often why he was skeptical of narratives celebrating any nation as a “vibrant democracy.” When democratic vibrancy became a goal in itself, political competition often rewarded obstruction instead of progress. He believed that democracy without decisiveness could lead to underperformance. Good government, whether democratic or not, should be judged by its ability to act clearly in the national interest, not by the noise or color of its politics.
Is political infighting, partisan interests working against national ones and missed opportunities be costs nations should pay for democratic vibrancy? Or can a middle ground be found?
