Filming for Spider-Man’s scenes took place primarily at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta in 2015, with Holland shooting much of his material separately to avoid plot leaks. Motion capture and CGI were used extensively, particularly for Spider-Man’s movement and combat during the airport battle.
Civil War was released on May 6, 2016, following heavy anticipation driven by the Avengers’ internal split and Spider-Man’s return to Marvel Studios. The film opened to approximately $179.1 million domestically in its first weekend. It went on to gross about $408 million in North America and roughly $1.15 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2016 globally at the time.
