What if you’ve been thinking about education all wrong? There’s a massive difference between a kid who’s been taught content and a kid who knows how to learn. One needs constant reteaching. The other figures things out independently for life. Most homeschool fears boil down to one belief: education is a content checklist. Your job is to pour specific information into your kid’s head. Miss an item? You failed. If that’s true, you should panic. The list is endless. Nobody covers it all. Schools don’t either. But somehow we only worry about homeschool gaps. What if education isn’t about memorizing facts? What if it’s about building someone who knows how to think? Who sees something unfamiliar and has the curiosity and tools to figure it out? That’s what happens at kitchen tables. We’re not creating test-takers. We’re creating learners. A learner fills their own gaps forever. The kid who crammed for Friday’s test and forgot by Monday? Those gaps are permanent. So who’s really behind? Episode 108 digs into this. Drop a 📚 and I’ll send it to you 👇 #HomeschoolMom #Homeschooling #HomeschoolLife

Your 6-year-old is crying over homework. The research says it’s not worth the fight. Cooper (2006), the largest synthesis of homework research ever conducted, found almost ZERO academic benefit for children under 10. What DOES work? 📖 Reading together (5 mins daily) 🗣️ Real conversations about their day 🧱 Unstructured play I’m not saying ignore your child’s school. I’m saying stop feeling guilty when you choose the book over the worksheet. Save this for the next homework meltdown 📌 #readlab #homework #parentingtips #learnathome

I didn’t realize not only could our mornings be so much better - but that those stressful mornings we were living were super unnecessary and unhealthy. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to believing rushed mornings are just “part of it.” There’s something about rushing kids (and parents) every morning that never sat right with me. And I say that as a former teacher. Kids starting their day stressed, tired, and already behind. And we call it normal? Now our mornings are slower. There’s time to wake up. Time to talk. Time to just be. And the difference in my kids is night and day. They’re calmer. More themselves. Not starting the day in survival mode. Rushed mornings might be common… but that doesn’t mean they’re good for our kids. Follow me @sarahwehkamp for a different way to think about homeschooling and family life. If you’re new here I’m Sarah Wehkamp-former public school teacher who now homeschools and helps you to get started as well. If homework in your house turns into a daily battle… you’re not alone! Maybe it starts with something simple like “Did you finish your homework?” And suddenly you’re met with eye rolls, frustration, shutdown, or even tears. What should be a 20-minute assignment becomes a 90-minute emotional standoff… And if you’re a homeschool parent, this might show up a little differently — maybe during independent work, writing assignments, or subjects your child keeps avoiding. But the tension can feel exactly the same. And somewhere in the middle of it you find yourself wondering: “Why is this so hard?” “Why won’t they just do it?” “Am I doing something wrong as a parent?” Here’s the truth most people don’t tell you: ⭐️Homework battles are rarely about homework.⭐️ They’re usually about control, overwhelm, and hidden learning gaps. So try this instead: 1) Separate Structure from Emotion 2) Have Clear Expectations & Calm Delivery 3) Reduce Lectures, Increase Systems Want to hear more? Drop me a 🙌🏼 and I’ll get you the link to my latest YouTube video where I dive deeper into each of these. How do you handle homework battles?

Our homeschool is not impressive. It’s not aesthetic. It’s not hours at a table. It’s definitely not Pinterest. But it works. Because it’s built on rhythm, not pressure. We start with a devotional. Then language arts with one kid while the others play (on me). Math together. Phonics with the next. Flashcards to wrap it up. Simple. Predictable. Done. And here’s what I’ve learned: Kids don’t need complexity. They need to know what comes next. That’s what gives them confidence. And honestly…that’s what gives me confidence too. Because when life is flexible (travel, work, little kids)…you need something steady inside it. That’s what rhythm does. If you’ve ever thought: “I could never homeschool…it would feel too chaotic” I get it. I thought that too. That’s exactly why I created The Rhythm Reset. To help you build simple anchors so your days don’t feel all over the place. It’s free right now. Link in bio.

Some of the biggest myths about homeschooling simply aren’t true. When we started homeschooling, people told me my kids would fall behind academically or struggle socially. Our experience has been the opposite. One of my daughters was actually bored in public school and not being challenged, so I brought her home. Homeschooling allowed her to move at her own pace, and she ended up graduating early with dual credits. And socialization? My kids have been involved in soccer, dance, karate, choir, drama, musical theatre, homeschool co-ops, library classes, church activities, and meet-ups with other families. Homeschooling didn’t isolate them — it connected them to people who shared their interests and values. Another myth is that parents have to know everything. I definitely don’t. But I’m a lifelong learner, and homeschooling has allowed me to model that for my kids. I teach what I know, and when we encounter something new, we learn it together. Homeschooling isn’t about being perfect or having all the answers. It’s about creating an environment where your children can grow, explore, and learn in ways that truly work for them. If you’ve been wondering whether homeschooling could work for your family, it might be more possible than you think. 💛 #ChristianHomeschool #HomeschoolForBeginners #HomeschoolMyths #HomeschoolMomLife #YouCanHomeschool

People love listing reasons you shouldn’t homeschool. You’re not qualified. Your kids will have gaps. They’ll be weird. Here’s what they don’t mention: homeschooled kids consistently score between the 65th and 80th percentile on standardized tests. Public school average sits at 50th. That holds even when the parent doesn’t have a college degree. How? You’re doing something classrooms can’t. You watch your kid’s face. Slow down when they’re lost. Speed up when they’re bored. Loop back when it didn’t click. It’s like having a personal trainer versus a group fitness class. One adapts to you. The other keeps moving whether you’re keeping up or not. Researchers call this responsive teaching. You’re doing it in your pajamas without realizing it’s the gold standard. You’re not the problem. You’re the advantage. Episode 108 tackles the real fears: academics, socialization, qualifications, money. What’s the biggest fear holding you back from homeschooling? 👇 #HomeschoolMom #Homeschooling #HomeschoolLife

When I started, I tried to be easygoing about everything. I didn’t want to be “that mom.” Too strict. Too structured. Too intense. So I bent. I softened. I overexplained. I second guessed. Ten years later, I don’t. Here are a few hills I will absolutely stand on now: • We wake up by 7 and start school by 8. No rolling out of bed at 10 and calling it homeschool. • Math happens every weekday. Not just when we feel like it. • We read real books daily. Not just short snippets or worksheets. • Bedtime is consistent. Overtired kids do not learn well. • We do not revolve our schedule around sports, co-ops, or activities. School comes first. • If a curriculum requires hours of prep, I won’t use it. Open and go wins in this house. • One hour of focused, peaceful work is better than five scattered hours of tears. None of that makes me harsh. It makes our home predictable. Calm. Clear. Year one me thought flexibility meant freedom. Now I know clarity is freedom. My kids thrive when expectations are steady. And I thrive when I stop apologizing for leading. You don’t need to run your homeschool like mine. But you do need to stop being afraid to set standards in your own home. What’s one thing you’ve stopped apologizing for lately? If posts like this encourage you, follow along for more real-life homeschooling moments.

Because I remembered I was in charge of our schedule and could decide when we take breaks. Now, we school from June - April and take week long breaks almost every month. Because that’s what works best for our family and helps us enjoy our school year more. When you remember that you have the freedom to do exactly what works for YOUR family, your entire homeschooling journey can shift from a chaotic battle to a peaceful flow. And that’s exactly what your family deserves. If you want to actually enjoy homeschooling again, head to the link in my bio for The Peaceful Homeschool Path: A Beginner’s Guide!
