DRTen things parents need to understand about teenagers
1. Teens are smart and highly capable. Often more capable than we expect. Speak to them with respect. Invite their thinking. Do not talk down to them.
2. They can tell when they are not being taken seriously. Respect is not optional to them. It is the foundation of trust.
3. Be honest about your intentions. Teens respond better when you explain the why. Say what you are worried about. Say what you hope for.
4. High expectations communicate belief. Standards say “I believe in you.” Giving up or trying to be their friend does not help them grow.
5. They need support, not control. Think mentor. Think coach. Think collaborator. Someone who guides instead of dominates.
6. Peer acceptance is deeply important to them. This is not shallow. The teen brain is wired for belonging. When you understand this, many choices make sense.
7. They often react to perceived intention more than actual words. A teen may not hear what you said. They respond to what they believe you meant, often shaped by past experiences.
8. Emotions come on fast and pass fast. Intense does not mean permanent. Your calm nervous system matters more than your lecture.
9. Body image is sensitive territory. Even casual comments can land heavily. Focus on health, strength, and respect for their body.
10. They are an incredible generation and the narrative needs to change. They are not lazy. They are not selfish. They are navigating enormous pressure with insight, creativity, and resilience.
Parents are not failing teens. We are often misunderstanding them.
When we shift from control to collaboration, everything changes.
