He transforms the wind’s chaotic movement into a silent message about our streets. Los Angeles-based choreographer Shoji Yamasaki brings the most invisible elements of the street litter to the center stage through his series “Littered Mvmnts”. By transforming the unpredictable motions of wind-blown waste into carefully crafted choreography, he holds up an artistic mirror to the environmental pollution we have come to accept as normal every day. This artistic journey began during the 2020 pandemic when Yamasaki noticed the “dance” of discarded materials while walking through Los Angeles. As a professional dancer and CalArts graduate, he does more than just mimic; he performs a silent but powerful protest against the normalization of trash in public spaces. By embodying the form of litter, he strives to create a bond of empathy between the viewer and the pollution that society often chooses to ignore. Yamasaki uses his own clothes to prevent waste and cleans up all the litter after each shoot. For him, these performances will only end when the environmental crisis itself does.
