🐴 Rider Physio Tip of the Day: Ankle Dorsiflexion on an Unstable Surface Did you know your ankles play a huge role in how stable and balanced you feel in the saddle? Working on ankle dorsiflexion (that’s the movement where you bring your toes up toward your shin) isn’t just a fancy physio drill—it directly impacts your ability to keep a deep, secure lower leg and absorb movement through your stirrups. Having good mobility at the ankle joint helps you follow your horse’s motion smoothly without gripping or bracing through your knees and hips. Your stirrup Irons are for creating depth, not pushing away from (enter scrunching heels phenom) ✨ Why add an unstable surface like a half-round foam roller? Because riding is never static. Horses move, shift, and change rhythm. Training your ankles to adapt to micro-instability makes your joints smarter, your reactions faster, and your overall position more resilient. ✅ Try this: • Stand on the flat side of a half-round foam roller (start next to a wall for balance assistance. Then work towards slowly removing fingers from the wall, working up to no hand on the wall) 👋🏼 • Slowly rock forward and back, focusing on controlled ankle motion into dorsiflexion. • Keep a soft bend in your knees and stay centered through your pelvis. • Feel the little stabilizers in your feet and ankles kick in—that’s your body learning how to adjust on the fly, just like when your horse spooks or changes gait. 🌟 Bonus: Strong, mobile ankles also reduce knee and hip strain! A while back, I shared a post on the mobility and strength demands of mounting (cue the controversy over not using a mounting block), and I stand by it—the ABILITY to mount from the ground on BOTH sides isn’t just about safety. It’s also a great screen of your mobility and strength. These videos are here to help you check and improve those areas, though of course, the goal isn’t to mount from the ground every day. We started by screening hip, knee, and ankle mobility. If you struggle with full knee flexion during the screening, a banded knee flexion mobilization may help improve range. But remember, mobility alone isn’t enough—you need to LOAD that range to make it functional. Start with box squats, gradually lowering the box over weeks or months until you can achieve a full-depth squat. Progress might be slow, but meaningful change takes time. Long-standing issues may require weeks, months, or even years of consistent effort. And remember, these exercises are not intended as a “quick fix”.
