SWWe recently showed you PD Glen trying on his boots for the first time, which sparked lots of questions about why they are needed.
There are a few reasons our #PoliceDogs might wear boots from time to time, but the main one is to protect their paws when deployed to environments that may contain hazardous materials, such as broken glass, needles or chemicals.
The wellbeing of our animals is our priority; every handler has the option to carry the boots with them so they can be fitted when they feel they’re needed.
The boots also provide extra grip for the dogs: No type of surface is out of bounds for them = nowhere for people to hide!
The boots also protect their pads on hot days, when our handlers take extra precautions to ensure the dogs are kept cool, including air-conditioned vehicles, and plenty of extra water.
❔ Some of you asked also if they ever wear goggles to protect their eyes. They don’t currently have any, although our team is always looking at new protective gear to keep our animals safe while on duty.

Llesiant ein hanifeiliaid yw ein blaenoriaeth, a gall pob swyddog cŵn gario’r esgidiau i’w rhoi ar y ci yn ôl yr angen.
Gall yr esgidiau hefyd roi gafael ychwanegol i’r cŵn, ac mae hyn yn golygu y gallan nhw fynd ar unrhyw fath o arwyneb = dim lle i bobl guddio!
Rheswm arall dros wisgo esgidiau yw gwarchod eu pawennau ar ddiwrnodau poeth.
