After seeing 2 videos basically about me, one indirectly and one literally using my image, I felt the need to explain myself in a clear and concise fashion. So here is why I don’t like polyester. 1. It’s not breathable and it makes you and your clothes stink 2. It’s bad for the environment, and will never biodegrade 3. The majority of polyester is cheap, and even if it’s not at the end of the day I’m not buying high end ✨plastic✨ 4. Corporations choose poly mainly because it’s cheaper to produce and higher profit margins. Even at high end stores charging premiums when they could use wool, silk, cashmere, and leather 5. Polyester is bad for you health. There’s multiple studies on how it impacts your reproductive health, and how you absorb flame retardants and PFA’s into your skin when working out in polyester. If you want to buy polyester that’s up to you, but I will not. #polyester #fabriceducation #fabricreels #plasticclothing #fabrictok #plasticfree

myth busting polyester 🤓 polyester isn’t automatically cheap, uncomfortable, or disposable. high-quality polyester can hold structure, resist wrinkles, keep its color, and last for years, which makes it incredibly practical for real life. but yes, there are downsides. it’s plastic-based, not biodegradable, and low-quality versions can trap heat or pill over time. the key? focus on quality, construction, and how often you’ll actually wear the piece. and if you’re buying polyester, opt for recycled polyester whenever possible ♻️ it’s not perfect, but it’s a better environmental choice than virgin polyester. the best fabric is the one that works for your lifestyle and actually gets worn ✨

Polyester isn’t just fabric. It’s plastic. And it’s now one of the biggest hidden pollution problems in modern life. Credits for the video: @katherine —-> original creator Polyester is made from petroleum. The process starts with crude oil (or recycled plastic), which is chemically transformed into polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It’s melted, extruded into fibers, stretched, dyed, chemically treated, and woven into clothing. It feels like fabric. But chemically, it’s still plastic. Here’s where the crisis begins: Synthetic textiles are the largest source of primary microplastics in the ocean. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN, 2017), synthetic clothing accounts for ~35% of primary microplastics released into marine environments. Every wash releases plastic fibers. A 2016 study published in Environmental Science & Technology found that a single load of synthetic laundry can release hundreds of thousands of microfibers into wastewater. These fibers are too small to be fully captured by treatment plants — and they enter rivers, oceans, soil, and eventually the food chain. But it doesn’t stop there. Microplastics are now found inside the human body. Detected in human blood (Leslie et al., 2022, Environment International) Found in lung tissue (Amato-Lourenço et al., 2021) Identified in human placentas (Ragusa et al., 2021) Recently found in human brain tissue (2024 emerging data) Scientists are still studying the long-term effects, but early research links microplastic exposure to: • Inflammation • Oxidative stress • Endocrine disruption • Potential reproductive harm • Cellular damage in lab models Many synthetic fibers also carry additives — including plasticizers, dyes, and flame retardants — some of which are known endocrine-disrupting chemicals. This isn’t just an ocean issue. It’s an exposure issue. Fast fashion accelerated it. Activewear normalized it. And synthetic blends now dominate global clothing production. Polyester currently makes up over 50% of global fiber production — and that number continues to rise. Awareness is the first step. The conversation is just beginning.

🥼Polyester has only existed for… 80 YEARS - yet it now makes up more than 60% of global clothing production 🧪 🛢️DuPont invented polyester in the 1940s, introducing a petroleum-based fibre that would reshape fashion in less than a century. 👚 The fashion industry is one of the largest sources of chemical and water pollution globally. Every wash releases microplastics into waterways, contributing to an estimated 35% of primary microplastic pollution in the oceans. In under a century, a fibre designed for durability and convenience has filled landfills, polluted ecosystems, and will outlive the garments it was made for by hundreds of years 🌍

Microplastics in your balls? If you spend all day wearing polyester (plastic) - it’s not really a surprise. Over the last 50 years, production over polyester has 15x’ed! And it’s now in 60% of clothes - and 99% of activewear. If you want to reduce your exposure to microplastics, you should consider removing polyester from your wardrobe - especially clothing that sits on sensitive areas all day.

Reducing environmental harm isn’t always about the “cleanest” choice, it’s often about the least harmful one. This fleece already exists. Throwing it away doesn’t stop microplastics, and replacing it with something new adds more emissions, more resource extraction, and more manufacturing impact. So for now, my approach is simple: ✔️ wear what I already own ✔️ wash it less and on cold ✔️ replace it only when it’s truly at the end of its life #microplastics #sustainability #environmentalism

It feels smooth, soft, almost luxurious. That’s exactly the trap. Synthetics can imitate premium fabrics at first touch, but over time they pill, stretch out, hold onto odors, and lose their structure. The issue isn’t polyester itself, it’s when it makes up most of the fabric. ✅ Choose: Blends with at least 50% natural fibers like cotton, wool, cashmere, linen, or viscose. They breathe better, drape naturally, and age far more gracefully. ⚠️ Be cautious: 60%+ polyester Breathability drops noticeably Odor retention becomes a thing Fabric starts behaving like plastic, especially in knits Draping looks fine at first, but wear shows quickly. ❌ Skip: 80–90%+ polyester, acrylic, or nylon. High risk of pilling and shine Loses shape faster Traps heat and smell Feels “cheap” with time, even if it didn’t on day one. No matter how good it feels on day one, it won’t survive real wear. Before falling for the brand name, read the fabric label. That’s where the real story is told.

Or in any decade of your life!😌🫶 On a serious note though, not only is polyester associated with textile dermatitis (which causes skin irritation and itchiness) but it’s one of the worst clothing materials for the environment 🌍 Polyester is a non biodegradable and petroleum derived plastic which means it can take centuries to break down and in the process will release microplastics 🤯 These microplastics end up in our ocean and food chain, destroying different ecosystems. Because it is such a cheap material, it makes up 63% of all clothing and is commonly used by fast fashion brands. Polyester is very poor quality, meaning your clothes will fall into disrepair sooner and need replacing, contributing to the vicious cycle of fast fashion and increasing landfill and pollution of our planet 🌍 Next time you buy something, check the quality by looking at the material composition on the tag. It’s important to note it’s not only fast fashion brands which use polyester! Some brands charge incredibly high prices for clothes which are of the same quality as fast fashion - despite marking themselves as a luxury brand! Be sure to choose environmentally friendly brands to ensure you don’t fall for this! ♻️ Do you check the materials used in your clothing? #polyester #clothingmaterials #fastfashionsucks #sustainableliving #sustainablelife
