In April, the trail is expected to fully reopen after a year and a half closure due to the damage caused by the August 2024 wildfires. We’re all waiting for that moment.
But even now, its shorter — and arguably most beautiful — section is open and accessible to visitors.
A small but important tip before you go:
Check the webcam at Pico do Arieiro to avoid arriving in thick clouds. It makes all the difference.
And here’s something most tourists don’t do —
My favorite time to hike PR1 is at sunset, not sunrise. While the majority wakes up early, I prefer watching the light fade over the ridges. It feels quieter. More dramatic. More personal.
