The mat is only preparation. In yoga, we learn to breathe through discomfort. In life, we learn to breathe through challenge. On the mat, we meet resistance in the body. In life, we meet resistance in our relationships, our ego, our shadow. The philosophy is simple — how you respond in traffic, in conflict, in uncertainty… that is your real asana. Your shadow will follow you everywhere. Yoga doesn’t remove it. It teaches you to face it with awareness. Practice doesn’t end when class ends. It begins the moment life tests you. Life is the real practice.

Not every student comes to Yoga to learn postures. Some come because their soul is calling. Alexander did not arrive only to practice asanas. He arrived with questions. With silence inside him. With a deep longing to understand life beyond movement. In our classroom at Shiva Rishi Yoga, the practice is not only alignment of the body — it is alignment of Dharma. As Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita, “Yoga is skill in action.” Yoga is not escape. Yoga is clarity. Yoga is responsibility with awareness. Alexander listens deeply. He does not rush the posture. He studies the breath. He studies the mind. He studies himself. This is the true classroom feeling — not competition, not performance, but inner transformation. In every adjustment, in every pranayama, in every moment of silence, the teaching becomes alive. Bhagavad Gita teaches us: When the mind becomes steady like a flame in a windless place, that is Yoga. And when a student begins to embody that stillness, the teacher’s heart becomes full. Alexander is not just learning Yoga. He is becoming Yoga. This is the spirit of our traditional teaching — discipline with compassion, structure with softness, philosophy with direct experience. Yoga is not what we show. Yoga is what we become. 🙏 #ShivaRishiYoga #TraditionalYoga #BhagavadGitaWisdom #YogaTeacherTrainingIndia #InnerTransformation AuthenticYoga RishikeshStyle KeralaYoga YogicLife YogaPhilosophy ConsciousLiving

Once you have had a glimpse of something, it is foolish to try to jump again and again and have a glimpse of it. It is time you built a ladder to scale the wall, isn’t it? You had a glimpse; you know it is worthwhile, so what is the point of jumping again and again to have a peep over the wall? Once you know it is worthwhile, you must try to build a step-ladder so that you can climb up across the wall and go there for good. Jumping up can happen in so many ways for so many reasons; it sometimes may even happen accidentally, but the ladder will not happen accidentally. It needs to be built. You need a technology for building a ladder. That is what we are trying to do. all the yoga that we are trying to teach you is just a way for you to build a ladder where you do not have to jump up to see something. Slowly, step by step, you go up. If you just keep the simple practice every day, I will guarantee you a hundred percent that in a year’s time, or in two years’ time, your experience of life will be very, very different from what it is right now. This is one hundred percent guaranteed. There is no question about it. If you are doing it properly and keeping it up, you will see the way you experience life, the quality of your life will gradually change without even you noticing. Slowly, step-by-step, it will change, and slowly it will deliver you there. ~ Sadhguru #hathayoga #sadhana #awakening #trendingreels #viralreels

I learnt a lot during my time in a yoga ashram. But over time, most lessons faded… and a few stayed. Five teachings remained with me. They deepened, refined, and quietly shaped who I am today. Here are the 5 most precious takeaways from my time in the ashram. 🌸 [Yoga, ashram life, growth, mindset, lifestyle]

Meditation isn’t an act. It’s an achievement. 🏆 If sitting in silence feels like hell, you aren’t failing; you’re just skipping the steps. You don’t DO meditation; you reach it through discipline (Tapas), a comfortable and stable posture (Asana), the control of the breath (Pranayama) and high level of concentration (Dharana). Stop trying to force the void. Start doing the work. #Ashtanga #MeditationHacks #YogaPhilosophy #MindsetShift #FastBrain

Today we have an abundance of yoga teachers but what we truly need are people who practice real yoga and share this ancient science of self-realization authentically. Here are my thoughts on what qualifies a real teacher: 1) An established sadhana (spiritual practice). If a yoga teacher has no spiritual life, they are no different from a workout instructor, and this is not yoga. Sadhana is the means for self-realization and liberation, the foundation of our lives as spiritual aspirants, and the basis from which we can genuinely share as teachers. 2) Ethical conduct. A real teacher is compassionate, treats others with kindness, and lives accordingly—including being vegetarian, or ideally vegan. There is no yoga without yama and niyama. A teacher should be able to name these principles without hesitation and strive sincerely to embody them. None of us are perfect, but we should always be trying our best. 3) Connection to a legitimate yoga lineage. The tradition places great emphasis on the guru-disciple relationship. A real teacher should be approved by their own teacher or guru to go forth and share the knowledge. If you wish to become an expert, learn from a bonafide spiritual master. 4) Some degree of lived realization. Yoga teachers do need not be fully self-realized—I certainly am not— but through devoted practice, ethical living, and association with advanced yogis, something should begin to shift. In their body, their mind, their perception, their life. This is where a teacher can offer something truly authentic: their own journey and experience. Otherwise, we are simply repeating what we have heard from others. Students want to know your story and how yoga has changed your life. This is not a checklist to judge others by but a mirror I hold up to myself, daily—and an invitation for all of us to go deeper. Aṣṭāṅga-Vinyāsa ✨🧘🏾 The point isn’t doing fancy poses, it’s training structure, through discipline, and a nervous system that can hold intensity without scattering. ✅ Ashtanga-Vinyasa (modern method) = a practice system (sequence + breath + movement) ✅ Patañjali’s Ashtanga (8 limbs / Rāja Yoga) = a path of inner mastery So why do both? Because they serve different functions Ashtanga-Vinyasa gives you a container: rhythm, discipline, embodied focus. Great when you need grounding and strength. Patañjali / Rāja Yoga gives you the direction: the inner limbs, ethics, and the meditative orientation that turns practice into freedom (liberation) not just self-improvement. Practice with focus and stay humble. Don’t get obsessed with the practice that too you must drop one day when it has no more relevance to your path. Freedom is the point of all paths of Yog. 🙏 #yoga #ashtanga #meditation #movement #philosophy

The Three Gunas: Understanding Your State of Mind One of the great benefits of yoga is observing the gunas — the different states of the mind. The three gunas are tamas, rajas, and sattva. Tamas is heavy, lethargic, stuck. Rajas is dynamic, unstable, unrelenting. Sattva is clarity. Availability. Receptivity. When you’re in a sattvic state, you’re aware, you’re open. You’re not clinging to something to do, you’re not pushing things away. You’re just available. Here’s how they show up in my life: When my mind is tamasic, I find myself losing my way. I don’t want to do the things I know I’m meant to do. I get distracted. I feel lost or ambivalent about my life and my path. When my mind is rajasic, I’m running in place. Doing tons of things. Seeing lots of people. Filling my schedule. Over-teaching, over-talking, over-doing everything — but not really moving anywhere. Exhaustive energy, but no traction. When I’m in a sattvic state, I see that I’m actually moving forward. I have clear ideas of my path, where I’m meant to go in different areas of my life. And I’m moving. Sattva is like when your mind is a transparent pane of glass. You can see through the glass to the road ahead, and you move in the right direction. Losing my way = tamasic. Running in place = rajasic. Moving forward clearly = sattvic. All the practices of yoga are aimed at having a sattvic state of mind so we can draw from deep wisdom within. The transparent state of mind allows us to draw from a deeper place than the mind itself — from our spirit, our deepest consciousness, our soul. That’s where the real wisdom comes that tells us what to do next. "We have to find a way to go deeper inside, deeper in the practice. We are not stuck in a group of people just talking about asana and trying to explain how to do handstand and how to do back-bending. That knowledge is very limited and it’s unnecessary knowledge you are gaining. What you need to know is how to prepare yourself to gain greater knowledge. This is what yoga practice is about. Yoga is just an idea, like consciousness, and higher consciousness. It is also like a tool. A guru gives tools to students. A guru shows how to use them to discover this brighter lightness, which is called jnana. The asana is only part of it. We have to come together and practice and go towards this. If students don’t know how to use the tools it will be a disaster. It’s only through a guru, your teacher, that any knowledge is transferred" R. My class begins at 6 a.m. Sharp. Not 6:01. Not 6:02. If someone is even a second late, they don’t enter. Because yoga is not convenience. It is commitment. Which means if you choose to come, you shape your life around that one hour. And then there is this teenager. While the rest of the city is asleep… while the streets are still dark… while even the sun hasn’t decided to rise… He is already on his bicycle. Alone. Riding from very far away. Through the cold morning air. Through silence. Through darkness. Just to reach before 6. Because he knows — if he’s late, the doors will close. He once told his father the class was free. Not to cheat. Not to manipulate. But because that was the only way he would be allowed to come. There’s something about that which breaks my heart a little. What kind of longing makes someone that young protect their practice like this? At an age where most teenagers want extra sleep, phones, friends, distractions… He chooses discipline. He chooses breath. He chooses to sit with himself. Every day. And when practice begins, he is completely there — steady, attentive, sincere. Not doing yoga like it’s an activity. But like it matters. Like it’s life itself. Sometimes I look at him and feel my throat tighten. Because no one taught him this devotion. No one forced him to be here. Something inside him simply called… and he listened. That kind of calling is rare. And he isn’t the only one. There are more youngsters like this now — quietly turning inward, choosing sadhana without anyone telling them to, walking toward stillness in a world that constantly pulls them outward. When people talk about the future and feel worried, I don’t. Because I have seen it. I have seen the future. It looks like a teenager cycling through the dark at dawn… just to sit on a mat and close his eyes. And somehow, that gives me more hope than anything else ever could.
