COI didn’t realise it was Engineering Week until today.
Which is ironic, because I’ve just spent lots of time thinking about what engineers are actually remembered for.
Engineering Week is about celebrating the people who shape our world.
And here’s the truth.
Most of the shaping happens quietly.
It’s not loud.
It’s not glamorous.
It’s rarely understood by the people closest to us.
But it’s everywhere.
Hospitals that reduce infection risk.
Schools where children can concentrate.
Buildings that are dry, healthy and safe.
Infrastructure that works so reliably no one notices it.
Engineers don’t just “do drawings”.
We influence health.
We influence safety.
We influence learning.
We influence the environment people live 90% of their lives inside.
That’s not small.
So this week, instead of just saying “Happy Engineering Week”, maybe ask yourself:
What do you want to be remembered for?
And maybe take a moment to tell someone what you actually do — not your job title, but your impact.
Because if we don’t explain it, how would anyone know?
Engineers make life happen.
