It’s time to get your ranunculus pre-sprouted for fall planting! If you live in zones 7 and up, you can presprout your ranunculus now for weeks of gorgeous spring flowers.. If you’re in a different zone, save this info for February or March! One of the biggest mistakes I see people doing is starting these flowers way too late… and the common instructions actually encourage this mistake because they often say to “start after your last frost”… but if you do this, you won’t get many flowers and they won’t be that good. Why? Ranunculus go dormant once temps consistently reach 80 degrees F, so if you wait until your last frost date to start… well by the time they’re blooming, most climates are already reaching those temperatures. So the secret to healthy, beautiful plants is: don’t start them too late!! Like other cool flowers, the long growing period in cool weather helps establish a strong root system that will spring into loads of flowers once the temperatures start warming up. Ranunculus can easily handle temperatures of 26 degrees F for several hours, which is why fall planting can be a great choice! And if you can’t fall plant… aim to start them in late winter instead. Presprouting is simple: Soak your corms for 4-6 hours and then lay them in a row with the ‘tentacles’ down in trays with potting soil. Cover with another thin layer of soil and keep them in a 60-65 degree space until you see a few leaves on each plant. It generally takes 2 weeks. Once you see leaves, transplant them into your beds app. 6 inches apart. You can either set up low tunnels over them (you’ll get longer stems), or just leave them in the open air… but make sure you cover with a frost cloth if your temperatures drop below 26 degrees. Save this for reference when you plant and let me know if you have further questions! 💐 . . . #springflowers #ranunculus #flowerfarm #flowers #cutflowers #cottagecore #gardening

Did you know that Ranunculus, also called the “Persian Buttercup,” has been cherished for centuries for its layered, rose-like petals and vibrant colors? These blooms aren’t just beautiful, they’re a science of freshness. Right here at our Oceanside farm, we cultivate Ranunculus the old-fashioned way, hand-harvested from our sun-kissed fields. Imagine walking through rows of blooms, petals brushing your fingertips, the scent of spring in the air. Capture your IG-worthy moments with @mellanofarmstand, or enjoy other farm adventures like U-Pick and tractor rides. 🚜🍓 In just a few weeks, the fields will burst into full bloom, delivering vibrant, Mellano-grown Ranunculus straight to your favorite locations. 💡 Florist Tip: Ask your sales rep to add these seasonal treasures to your spring orders. Note: Video clips were taken from last year’s fields.

Ranunculus are cool weather loving, spring blooming beauties I start in mid January in my zone 6a garden climate! Steps: 1) Soak corms in water: This hydrates them and in turn allows them to start growing quicker. 3-4 hours does the trick! Be careful not to leave them too long or they can rot. Once they look plump, you’re golden! 2) Keep the water flowing to add oxygen- these are living little plants that don’t appreciate sitting in stagnant water they are actively making dirty. A stream of water flowing works, or just change the water every hour. 3) Sprouting: I use trays to get them growing somewhere cool, but not freezing (my garage). After about 10-14 days they will start developing roots! Keep soil lightly moist the whole time. After about 3ish weeks of this indoor sprouting head start, I plant the rooted corms outside around mid February. You can skip this sprouting step if you’d like, but I have found it helps produce much bigger plants more quickly. 😊 Part 2 covering how I plant the sprouted corms and how I protect them from winter temps is coming next! 😁☃️ Two common FAQs: What if I live somewhere warmer than you? If you live in garden zones 7a and warmer, your ranunculus will do best started in the fall so they can get plenty of cool growing weather before spring gets too warm. Why plant them while it is still cold out? Ranunculus are a cool weather loving flower and need to grow in the cold (but not too cold- a real goldilocks moment!) to bloom in time before it gets too hot in the spring. Ranunculus will stop blooming when late spring temperatures reach around 75 degrees, which typically happens in May in my area. My favorite sturdy seed starting trays are from @bootstrapfarmer! ☺️ #ranunculus #growflowers #flowerfarmer #flowerfarm #backyardgarden #cottagegarden #gardentips #gardeninspo

Field of dreams ✨ Have you ever walked in a field full of flowers? When prepping for my recent trip down the California coast with my family, I was so excited to discover a place with fields full of ranunculus, one of my favorite flowers. Every spring in Carlsbad, CA (between LA and San Diego) @the_flower_fields opens to the public from March 1 to May 8. As you enter, there are some activities for kids like gem mining and a sweet pea maze (not really in bloom yet unfortunately), a garden shop and food stalls. But when you go into the ranunculus fields—oh my! Fields and fields as far as the eye can see, full of ranunculus 🤩 They are planted in rows by color, so of course I had to park myself in front of the sunset shades, my favorite 🥰 A few things to note if you’d like to visit: (Save this for when you need it!) *You must reserve tickets ahead of time online for a specific date and time of entry. If you’re late they still let you in! *The flowers are planted in full sun, so bring a hat *Wear close-toed shoes, not sandals or flip flops. There are dirt roads everywhere *You can’t wander into the middle of the fields—it’s a working commercial flower farm. Initially I was sad about this—but they do have short entries/paths going into the fields on the sides so that you can see the flowers up close. The upside is that there won’t be people in the background of your photos 👍🏻 *You can’t pick your own but they do sell bunches of cut ranunculus as well as ranunculus corms at the store on-site. I left with some packets of corms to add to my collection Have you been to the flower fields? If not, is this on your bucket list? Let me know in the comments! Follow @mimosaboston for more spring flowers✨ Please *do not* repost this reel in your feed without express permission. Ranunculus and anemones- the first year I ever grew them in larger quantities was in our raised bed garden. I loved the look and could hardly cut any because I thought they were just so beautiful right exactly where they were. They’re one of the easier flowers I’ve ever grown. They like the cool spring weather, they’re easy to store, easy to start, and the blooms have a long vase life! 🥰

Ranunculus season is one of my favourites. Their delicate, charming and romantic blooms are some of the most gorgeous flowers we grow. They’re fleeting but every bit worth it. Here are some tips for growing the most gorgeous ranuncs! ❀ Don’t skip the pre-sprout! Pre-soaking and sprouting ranunculus wakes them out of their dormancy and gives them an early start, a super important step to getting them started! ❀ Warmer climates should plant ranunculus in the fall. Where ranunculus can’t overwinter 🙋🏻‍♀️ they should be planted early spring as they don’t love the heat. ❀ Plant in well draining soil with organic matter. Ranuncs thrive with added compost! ❀ When temps get too hot, especially growing them in a hoop (which we totally recommend for amazing stem length) provide shade with shade cloth. #ranunculus #flowers #springflowers #flowerfarm #farmerflorist #florist #farmingtips #gardentips #gardening #flowergarden #flowerinspo #inspiredbypetals #cutflowers #cutflowergarden #flowering #letscolortheworld
