After treatment:

For people who haven’t spent more than a few minutes with me- I can’t burp, and instead I make this pterodactyl screech, which I feel is a sign from the Gods that I should be singing death metal 🤷🏼♀️ the actual name for the condition is Retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction (R-CPD) where the muscle at the top of my throat doesn’t relax to allow gas to come through (burp) and instead spasms… and produces this sound 🦕 it also means I can’t eat or drink a fizzy drink before singing 🥲

DREver heard of RCPD?
It stands for Retrograde Cricopharyngeus Dysfunction — a mouthful that basically means your upper esophageal sphincter (the “gate” at the top of your esophagus) doesn’t relax properly to let gas escape.
What it feels like:
• Inability to burp (ever)
• Bloating and pressure in the chest/neck
• Gurgling noises in the throat
• Discomfort after eating or drinking, especially carbonated beverages
Who gets it?
Often young to middle-aged adults, but it can affect anyone. Many people have had symptoms for years without knowing there’s a name for it.
How we diagnose it:
Esophageal manometry with provocation — a test that measures pressure in your esophagus while we gently challenge it with a gas stimulus, to see if the upper esophageal sphincter relaxes.
How we treat it:
Botox injections into the cricopharyngeus muscle — relaxes the “gate” so air can escape
Some may later need a minor surgical procedure if symptoms recur
Bottom line:
If you can’t burp and live with constant bloating and throat pressure, RCPD is real — and fixable.
