Total Internal Reflection of Light ⬇️ Refraction of Light Refraction is the bending of light as it passes between different media due to a change in its speed. Light bends towards the normal when moving from a less dense to a denser medium and away from the normal when moving from a denser to a less dense medium. This effect is seen in phenomena like the apparent bending of objects in water. Critical Angle The critical angle is the angle of incidence at which light traveling from a denser to a less dense medium refracts along the boundary, making a 90-degree angle with the normal. If the angle of incidence exceeds this critical angle, the light is no longer refracted but totally reflected back into the denser medium. Total Internal Reflection (TIR) Total Internal Reflection occurs when light in a denser medium hits the boundary with a less dense medium at an angle greater than the critical angle, resulting in the light being completely reflected back into the denser medium. This principle is crucial in technologies like optical fibers, where it helps transmit light with minimal loss.
