Once you try homemade REAL maple syrup🍁, you’ll never be able to go back to that artificially-flavored high fructose corn syrup at the store again! It’s a bit of work, but honestly, by the time late winter hits, I think we’re all itching to get outside and do something productive after a long winter of blobbing anyway, right? Some additional tips I wasn’t able to squeeze into the video: 🍁While the sap from sugar maples has the highest sugar content, you can use the sap from ANY kind of maple tree! It might just take a bit longer to boil it down 🍁If you can’t locate a large root, placing the tap under a large branch on the south side is great, too 🍁Use a 7/16” drill bit and drill 2-2.5 inches deep with a slight upward angle so that the sap flows freely out 🍁We use both the metal hanging buckets and the plastic buckets with tubing, both work great it just depends on how much you want to spend 🍁Treat your sap like milk. It will spoil! It should be stored below 40 degrees and for no longer than 7 days. If it has a yellow or milky color, or smells “off,” it has spoiled. 🍁We used the temperature method when we first started (219F), but now I like to use a refractometer and look for a Brix level of 66-68.9% 🍁The maple syrup will change color as the season progresses! It’ll be light yellow at the beginning and be dark brown by the end. 🍁The season only lasts 4-6 weeks (weather permitting). You’ll know it’s over when the temps remain above freezing or when the buds start to mature on the tree. Plus, the sap will be a bit off tasting with a yellow color to it. *If you’d like links to the same maple tapping supplies that we use and love, just comment START and I’ll send them your way!✨

Did you know you only need one tree to make maple syrup? And it doesn't even have to be a sugar maple! We tap just two trees every year and we make two gallons of maple syrup. It's one of the most rewarding things we produce, and you really don't need any fancy equipment to do it. All the details of how we make maple syrup from start to finish, including our very cobbled together homemade setup, are in my instructional video. Just comment the word "LINK" and I'll send it to you! https://youtu.be/6ZBhORwKsoA

Making your own homemade maple syrup is easier than you think! Below are the basic steps to start the process - follow along to see the entire process from the beginning of tapping trees to the finished product of bottled maple syrup!🍁 •Locate maple trees on your property (the bigger the better) •Drill a hole into the tree approx. 3 feet high (you can drill 2 separate holes if it’s a bigger tree, for 2 taps) •Place the tap into the holes (we ordered our taps online) •Place the taps into the 5 gallon bucket lid with drilled holes The most important part of determining when you should place your taps is WEATHER! It HAS to be below freezing during the night, and above freezing during the day.❄️ #maplesyrup #homemade #maple #mapletree #syrup

Day six of our maple syrup series 🍁 Today was the big day—boiling down all the collected sap to make real maple syrup. I spent the day rendering it outside on a makeshift stove, then finished the boil inside to get the sap up to 119° and reach syrup consistency. It’s a long, hands-on process, but there’s nothing like the smell and taste of fresh, homemade maple syrup. Follow along to see the journey from tree to table.

They say you haven’t truly experienced a PA spring until you’ve tried to catch “liquid gold.” Today, I finally stopped talking about it and grabbed the drill. The weather is hitting that perfect sweet spot - freezing nights and 40-degree days and seeing that first drop of sap hit the bucket was weirdly emotional? 🥹 I’m officially a rookie maple sugarer, and I have about a million questions. Like... how much of this do I actually need for one stack of pancakes? And am I supposed to keep the dog away from the buckets? 🐕🚫 The Ask: Maple syrup experts - drop your best boiling tips for a beginner in the comments! 👇 How long is this really going to take me?

100% thanks to Zane we ran 83 gallons of sap through our evaporator this weekend and ended with 2 gallons of pure back yard maple syrup. I am so thankful for this yield despite a challenging season for us. I already can’t wait until next year when I will be able to help again. The process simply amazes me every year. We drill a hole in a tree, collect clear water-looking like sap, and boil it to 219° when it turns into syrup. Zero added ingredients. We always say, I wonder who the first person was to figure this out and what a shock when they got to taste this deliciousness😋🍁 Do you have any questions about making maple syrup? Should we do a Q&A?

Spring is in the air and it smells like maple syrup! 🌳🍁🥰🍁🌳 our house smells delicious 😋 If you have maple trees in your yard, you should consider making your own syrup. Its super easy and it doesn't take a ton of equipment. Don't have maple trees? You can make syrup from lots of trees including walnut, birch, sycamore, boxelder, and hickory. #maplesyrup #feelslikespring #doityourself

We did it!!! We finally made our own maple syrup!!! My husband and his father planted every one of these trees in 1991 when they built our home. Now, here we are, 35 years later, making maple syrup from these beautiful trees 🌳 I am truly humbled by this moment ✨💫 Longer version available on TikTok🩷 #Maple #MapleSyrup #MapleTree #MapleTapping #Homestead
