I stopped outsourcing my happiness I stopped waiting for a partner, a circumstance, or a future version of me to feel whole. I took radical responsibility for my emotional state and built the tools to shift it in real time. 2. I started regulating my nervous system instead of powering through life More hustle was never the answer. Safety in my body was. Breathwork, movement, and slowing down rewired how I responded to stress instead of living in constant fight or flight. 3. I cut off patterns that looked familiar but felt like shit Just because something was comfortable didn’t mean it was healthy. I stopped romanticizing chaos and started choosing peace even when it meant disappointing people. 4. I told the truth about what I actually wanted Not what looked good on paper. Not what I was supposed to want at this age. I got brutally honest about desire, purpose, connection, and joy and then I built my life around that truth. 5. I invested in myself like my life depended on it Because it did. I stopped treating my growth like an option and started treating it like oxygen. Coaching, tools, community, and commitment changed the trajectory of my entire life. If you think it’s too late for you, that belief is the only thing standing in the way. Midlife is not the beginning of the end. It’s the moment you finally stop abandoning yourself. UNLEARNING & REWIRING CIRCUITS FOR THOUGHTS & BEHAVIORS & REPLACING THEM • - People are understandably intrigued by neuroplasticity, which is our ability to rewire our nervous system. There are a couple of different types of neural rewiring, and I explain a few of those here but more to the point this post is about: HARNESSING LIMINAL STATES (such as the transition between being asleep and waking up) to self direct brain changes to unlearn and undo maladaptive thoughts and behavioral patterns and replace them with “better” ones. (As deemed by you). While might seem mystical it’s not mystical at all. Brain rewiring is triggered by highly focused, alert states but then actually occurs during deep sleep and rapid movement sleep. For more than two decades, neuroscientists have understood that you can capture both of these states and accelerate plasticity in liminal and “atypical” states, basically bringing together the focus and deep relaxation that we now know can accelerate the brain changes you’re seeking. You could use this to self direct better responses to stress, to encourage more focus and discipline around certain behaviors, or to stimulate essentially any self-directed change. It’s not the same as skill learning. Skill learning requires that you interact with the thing that you’re trying to learn. Tomorrow’s episode of the Huberman Lab podcast I host a MD where we go deep into this discussion and how the science of plasticity merges with specific eastern practices. Lots of tools and discussion of mechanism are in that conversation. I consider it one of the more important conversations we’ve ever had on the podcast as it gets to the root of behavioral and cognitive changes.
