Hermann Rorschach (1884-1922) This test carries legal and medical weight to this day, but should it? #rorschach provided a unique tool, but many disagree about its value and potential pitfalls. What do you think? Thanks to youtube user Alex Hffman for the animation. Move your finger slowly from left to right across the pattern while watching your finger with your eyes, taking about two seconds to travel across the whole width. When you reach the right speed you should start to perceive the stripes smoothly drifting to the right even though they are not actually moving. Then move your finger back the other way and follow it again with your eyes and the stripes should appear to drift smoothly to the left. After a little practice you can even switch the apparent direction of motion on your own without needing your finger as a guide. This visual phenomenon is known as Sigma Motion. It was named by the neuroscientist O. J. Grüsser, but the effect was first described by James Pomerantz. What’s fascinating is that the motion you see is not actually happening. Your brain creates the illusion because of the interaction between image reversal and eye movements. Here’s what’s happening psychologically: When your eyes move, the brain sends a motor command to the eye muscles. At the same time, it sends a copy of that command — called an Efference Copy — to the visual system. This internal signal helps the brain distinguish between: • Movement happening in the world • Movement caused by your own eyes In illusions like this, the signals don’t perfectly align, so the brain interprets the visual change as external motion. So even though the image is static, your brain constructs movement from the mismatch. It’s a powerful reminder of something important in psychology and neuroscience: We don’t see reality exactly as it is. We see the brain’s interpretation of it. Sometimes your brain invents motion where none exists. 💬 Comment “VISION” if the illusion fooled you. 🔔 Follow @healngrow.psych for more psychology and perception insights. The Psychology Experiment That Fooled Doctors 👨🏻‍⚕️ Back in the 1970s, a group of totally sane people checked themselves into insane asylums just to see if doctors could spot they were faking. But the result exposed something shocking about psychiatry. You see, eight volunteers claimed heard a voice in their head saying words like "Thud", "Empty", or "Hollow". That was enough to get them admitted to the asylum. There, the real test began. Once inside they acted totally normal. No symptoms, nothing. But doctors still labeled each each fake patient with severe mental illnesses. Some were stuck inside for more than 50 days. The wildest part is that across 12 hospitals, not a one staff member realized they were imposters. Stanford published the results, it rocked the entire psychiatric field. One hospital fought back, saying “Send us all your fakes, we'll catch them”. Over the next three months, they flagged 41 as frauds and suspected 42 more. But in the end, Stanford revealed the twist: they hadn’t sent a single fake patient at all. #RosenhanExperiment, #Psychology, #MentalHealth, #Psychiatry, #History, #MindBlowing, #TrueStory, #HumanExperiment, #OnBeingSane, #PsychologyFacts, #InsaneAsylum, #SocialExperiment, #Science, #DavidRosenhan, #CrazyFacts

🙋🏼‍♀️ So did you notice that it took more time and conscious effort to name the colour when it did not match the word? If you did then this is know as the Stroop effect. This short clip comes from the longer Stroop test that was originally designed by John Stroop in 1935. It was taught as one of the classic psychology experiments back in my undergraduate days and I’m sharing it with you as just one example of how amazing your brain is. So what is happening? The Stroop effect demonstrates something called cognitive interference. You experience a delayed reaction because the information about the colour of the print and the word does not match up. How is this useful? This test can be combined with others to measure a person’s selective attention capacity and their processing speed ability. Here are two theories about why it happens: The theory of automaticity suggests that recognising and labelling colours is not an automatic process so it takes time and conscious effort (maybe because you don’t often need to do this). The brain automatically understands the meaning of words because it is so well practiced at it. Another theory is selective attention theory. This suggests that colour recognition requires more attention than reading a word, so it takes longer. #stroopeffect #psychology #psychologyfacts #amazingbrain #psychologist #psychologytests #psychologytest tu17
