This is rare! No one told me about all the changes I was about to face when I was diagnosed with #scleroderma and here are 3 things I wish I knew    1. Literally someone else in the mirror! Yo, this is the scariest thing anyone could ever have to undergo. Scleroderma is a skin tightening condition and so my facial skin was so stretched out it exposed my upper jaw taking away my upper lip too. This was gradual but the changes were so fast it is scary. Goodbye lipsticks and balms 😁 and yes my face has changed quite a bit ever since.   2. Restricted movement. Skin is so tight it has restricted mobility and now I have walk very carefully because if I bump into something I can’t control/balance myself and poof to the ground. Imagine not being able to casually raise your hand to straighten your hijab! A whole new balancing act 😁  3. Ohhh the ulcerations keep me up at night. It’s so painful and sometimes restricting me to be active on some days. Alhamdulillah though, I try to ignore it and occupy myself with lots of chats with mum and deep conversations with my Allah.    Rare diseases are difficult both physically and emotionally. Two years ago, a dog bite changed my face && for a while, it changed how I saw myself. I was already navigating wrinkles in my early 30s… but adding visible scarring felt overwhelming. Makeup didn’t sit the same. I avoided certain lighting. I’ve been focused on hiding instead of living. Healing hasn’t just been physical — it’s been emotional. Systemic sclerosis, also known as scleroderma, is a chronic autoimmune disease causing fibrosis (hardening) of the skin and internal organs (lungs, heart, kidneys, GI tract) due to excess collagen, often starting with Raynaud's (finger color changes) and leading to swelling, skin thickening, and potential organ failure . It's categorized as limited (milder, below elbows/knees) or diffuse (widespread skin/organs) . While the exact cause is unknown, it involves immune system dysfunction, genetics, and environmental triggers, with prognosis varying by type, but lung/heart/kidney issues are major mortality risks . Key Characteristics & Symptoms Autoimmune: The immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues. Fibrosis: Overproduction and buildup of collagen, making tissues hard. Vasculopathy: Damage to small blood vessels. Common Early Signs: Raynaud's phenomenon (fingers/toes turn white/blue), swollen hands/fingers, joint pain, heartburn. Progression: Skin tightens, spidery blood vessels (telangiectasias) appear, and internal organs can be affected.  Types of Systemic Sclerosis Limited SSc (lcSSc): Affects skin on face, hands, feet, lower legs; slower progression; can involve CREST syndrome (Calcinosis, Raynaud's, Esophageal dysmotility, Sclerodactyly, Telangiectasias). Diffuse SSc (dcSSc): Affects skin on trunk and limbs; rapid onset; higher risk of severe internal organ involvement. Organ Involvement & Complications Lungs: Pulmonary hypertension, fibrosis. Kidneys: Scleroderma renal crisis (sudden high blood pressure, kidney failure). Heart: Heart failure, arrhythmias. GI Tract: Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), heartburn, motility issues.  Diagnosis & Management Diagnosis: Clinical signs, autoantibody tests (like ANA). Treatment: Focuses on managing symptoms and specific organ complications, using immunosuppressants, blood pressure drugs, etc., with ongoing monitoring.

Sorry for the long video (it’s been a while) Whilst I’m so grateful for where my skin is at in comparison to this time last year 🍅, I can’t help but feel depressed. I don’t want to use this space to complain, but I just wanted to share where I’m at right now. Everytime I try and live a little more, my skin ends up suffering. The damage that I’ve caused to my skin over two decades of applying steroid creams runs deep. The physical side to the illness is still very much present in my day to day, but I’m finding the mental side of the illness has been showing up a lot more lately. Sometimes it feels like I might just be posting my highlight reel here & it’s only because I’m posting when I have the energy. But I thought it was equally as important to share how I’m feeling now. Things are hard right now, but I’ve got a plan and I’ve got my support system. For those of you who are also feeling the weight of your chronic health issue, I hope you’re managing okay.
