What is self-sufficiency really? A lot of people think it means doing everything yourself. Growing all your food. Making everything from scratch. Never needing help. That’s not really it. Self-sufficiency is much simpler. It’s knowing you can handle things. For example: 1 Cooking a meal instead of ordering takeout 2 Fixing something small instead of throwing it away 3 Looking up how something works and trying it yourself 4 Learning one practical skill at a time like mending your own clothes You don’t need to know everything. You just need to know you can figure things out. That kind of confidence grows slowly. One skill at a time. When was the last time you fixed something instead of replacing it? Want a small challenge? Try this: The next time something breaks, look up how to fix it before replacing it. Side note: You can start smaller than you think. I don’t know about you but I feel like it’s a pretty good time to be investing in resilient home systems, food producing and preserving tools, and an arsenal of knowledge 🤷‍♀️ If I was trying to build a more self-sustainable home here’s where I’d put my money: - Water bath or pressure canner - A solid collection of preserving jars, lids and rings - A benchtop water filter - A fermentation crock - A good quality food dehydrator - Sturdy garden tools - Fruit trees - Solar panels and a battery - A grain mill - Knowledge: education, courses, mentors and books. You don’t need to try and figure it out all by yourself. What would be in your top 10?
