Aunamos esfuerzos con @paztamburrini y salió una serie de video-tutoriales donde enseño a construir 4 marionetas de papel calado + una clase en vivo que dictara @paztamburrini , en el marco de #saberesCompartidos, en la que contará como construir un teatro de sombras y a hacer magia como solo ella sabe. Los video-tutoriales iran apareciendo durante esta semana en la cuenta del Museo del Traje y la clase de Paz será este domingo a las15hs. Wayang Kulit, the shadow puppets of Bali. Puppets are made across Indonesia, in Bali they hold a special place for religious rituals as vessels of the epics and cultural history. Balinese ceremonies use dance performances, gamelan music, and puppet shows, not to please people, but for the veneration of god. While they are called shadow puppets, only at night are performances done against a screen and kerosene lamp. Otherwise, puppets are seen in plain sight in the day. The Dalang is the name of the puppet master. Puppeteering is expressed much the same as the dance, the dalang moves the puppets as if they themselves are dancers and vocalizes for hundreds of characters. It is normal for the dalang to know the entirety of the script and all character voices for epics including the Ramayana and Mahabharata. It was a privilege to be able to take a closer look at the Che Abas shadow puppet collection with Patricia Hardwick and Jocelyn Ng, researchers from @scdhch at @sunwayuniversity! Not only do many of these 140-year-old puppets retain some of their vibrant decoration, but the delicacy of their craftsmanship is remarkable. Holding them up behind a back-lit screen revealed this even more clearly, with details like jewellery becoming easier to see. By photographing the puppets against a plain background as well as from behind the screen Patricia and Jocelyn have created detailed records they can study further. This will allow them to track how the depictions of these characters have changed since the puppets were made in about 1884 and could allow for replicas being made so that this design style can be appreciated by audiences again in the future. #Museum #BehindTheScenes #Research #ShadowPuppets #Ramayana Video description: Researchers, assisted by members of the museum's staff, photograph shadow puppets made from animal hide against a plain background before holding them up behind a backlit screen to cast their shadows. Captions on screen read: "Each of these stunning shadow puppets needed detailed photographs to create a complete record of the collection. Then it was time to get out the screen, dim the lights, and watch a magical transformation take place... The shadows the puppets create reveal details which aren't as obvious when looking at the puppets themselves. Photographing the shadows creates a record of these details. This also gives us a sense of how they would have been seen by audiences over 140 years ago. Some of the puppets even have articulated jaws." The end card reads "MAA Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology" and features the museum’s logo.
