this killer whale is attacking its own pod and will not stop Killer whales, known for their strong social bonds, have been observed engaging in cannibalism. This surprising behavior challenges what we know about their complex relationships. 30 orcas vs. 2 gray whales! 😳💪🔥 | @monterey_bay_whale_watch experienced a crazy encounter on this memorable day while this big pod of killer whales attempted to take down 2 massive gray whales in Monterey Bay! The crazy attempted predation lasted over 5 hours and the orcas did not get to enjoy & eat the gray whales. There were so many notable moments of raw action from this encounter! Thank you to Nancy Black, the owner of @monterey_bay_whale_watch, who shared her footage of this notable day with us at Orcas Gone Wild! Footage filmed by her dedicated filmer - and one of Monterey Bay’s finest drone pilots (and now captain) @evanb_ocean ! 🎥: @evanb_ocean | shot with @monterey_bay_whale_watch Unauthorized use is prohibited! @monterey_bay_whale_watch x @orcasgonewild - BIG THINGS COMING SOON! 🤫🤝 #killerwhale #killerwhales #orcas #orcasvsgraywhale #MBWW #orcasgonewild

Every year, humpback whales make one of the longest journeys of any mammal on Earth. Around 10,000 kilometers from breeding grounds in places like Australia or Costa Rica all the way down to Antarctica, where they spend the summer eating krill and building up the fat reserves they need to survive the trip back. And for millions of years, the timing of that journey stayed remarkably consistent. Not anymore. A study from the University of Queensland tracked the migration of eastern Australian humpbacks over 21 years and found that the peak of their return south has shifted almost three weeks earlier compared to 2003. And the change didn’t happen gradually. It started suddenly after 2021 and has stayed that way since. The reason comes down to sea ice. Krill depend on it to survive, feeding on algae that grow underneath the ice. Less ice means less algae, less algae means less krill, and less krill means the whales run out of food earlier and head back sooner than their bodies are ready for. Here’s what makes this especially concerning. Humpbacks don’t eat during their migration north. They survive entirely on fat reserves built during their time in Antarctic waters. If those reserves are smaller because krill is scarce, females may not have enough energy to migrate, give birth, and get their calves back to the feeding grounds. The lead researcher on the study said she’s worried this could eventually start affecting birth rates. These whales came back from the edge of extinction after commercial hunting nearly wiped them out. The eastern Australian population went from just 300 individuals in the 1960s to around 40,000 today. That recovery took decades. What’s happening now is a different kind of threat, and it’s moving faster than they can adapt. #humpbackwhale #whalesmigration #oceanwarming #climatechange #marinelife

ORCAS HUNTING A HUMPBACK WHALE — via @rafafdezjr ⚠️ These images may be disturbing. “Something that will never be forgotten... Nature in its wildest and most brutal state. I never thought I would witness something like this. A family of orcas attacks a humpback whale calf. An hour of strategy. Of frenzy. We saw how they wouldn’t let it surface to breathe. How the mother fought desperately to save it alongside a male escort. But she couldn’t. They separated them. And in the end, nature took its course... A very impressive and sad event at the same time; the captains, with a lifetime at sea, had never seen anything like it. A long and agonizing hunt, meticulously planned by the orcas, a group of more than 15 individuals that finished off this calf to eat its tongue. That’s what the ocean is like sometimes: ferocious, heartbreaking, unforgettable, and sad.“ — @rafafdezjr

This is the raw reality of the ocean. 🌊 Orcas don’t attack randomly. They wait. They plan. They coordinate. And when the target is a baby whale… there is no room for mistakes. 🐋 The mother fights with everything she has, but nature shows no mercy — only survival. 👉 Is this cruelty… or the perfect balance of nature?
