Do you winter gear a solid and set it up for success at the end of this season. The key takeaway? Clean it, dry it, and store it somewhere cool and dark.
🧼 CLEAN
✔ Wash shells, puffies, and base layers (follow care labels)
✔ Give mitts, gloves, and toques a sniff test — wash if needed
✔ Wipe skis with base cleaner to remove dirt and salt
✔ Check skis for big scratches, edge damage or core shots and tune if needed
✔ Make sure skins are clean and fully dry
✔ Remove ski boot liners and footbeds and let them dry for up to 2 days
🛠 PRE-STORAGE PREP
✔ Loosen ski boot buckles and pack straps
✔ Store puffies and winter sleeping bags uncompressed
✔ Consider a fresh storage wax for skis or boards
✔ Store goggles in a protective bag
✔ Remove batteries from your avalanche transceiver
✔ Store skins glue-to-glue or with a skin saver
📦 STORAGE TIPS
✔ Store gear in a cool, dry, dark place
✔ Avoid attics, garages, and sheds with heat or moisture
✔ Keep skis, boards, and boots out of direct sunlight
✔ Airtight bins can help keep gear organized and protected
✔ Store skins somewhere cool and dry (some people even use the freezer)
✔ Triple check everything is completely dry before storing

Most ski jackets and bibs have a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating that makes water bead off the outside of the jacket. It just needs to be refreshed when it wears out!

💦 What is DWR?
This is a thin coat on the outside of waterproof gear that helps water bead off the fabric and prevent it from “wetting out”. Even when your jacket wets out, it’s technically still waterproof if it uses a membrane technology like GORE-TEX, BUT it’s going to be heavier and less breathable.
The DWR coat naturally degrades over time from oil, dirt, and friction. Modern DWR coatings actually degrade faster than old ones since most don’t include harmful forever chemicals anymore (which is good!!)
👩🏼🔧 The fix: Luckily, re-applying a new DWR coat is really easy (and inexpensive)!
First, just wash your gear with a ski gear-specific tech wash like Nikwax Tech Wash.
Then, toss your gear into the washing machine with a wash-in DWR, like Nikwax TX.Direct.
You can get a wash + DWR combo for around $20, which will wash a jacket + bibs 3x!
