Sorry, not sorry! I just can’t get enough of these blue florals at the moment. It was a bucket list achievement for me whenever I started SC Relics, to see it come to fruition is still something I can’t quite believe has happened. The Paisley‘s will forever be the more popular choice of these two types of finishes, but my heart lies with the blue florals. It’s almost hard to imagine that these finishes were extremely unpopular back in 1968 during the height of flower power. Many were stripped over their original finish and a lot were also painted over. But I’m more than happy to revive this year in guitar history by celebrating these two brilliant designs. So here’s to all those who love or own floral or Paisley guitars. This absolutely outstanding offset body was sent in by a customer for finishing. It was already deep contoured for me so once it arrived, it went straight into the paint queue.. There’s something very special about seeing a deep contoured painted body. The lacquer just sits on the curves so nicely and it’s a joy to see them getting the last coat before they head off to dry. This is a brilliant example of what can be achieved if you send your body in for finishing or refinishing so please, get in touch. Well, if you’re gonna do Straturday you might as well do it right. This 1964 Fender is in for some new threads before it heads back out strutting its stuff. It recently got stripped of its previous refinish and prepped for a fresh job. Needless to say, the dust had to be blown off the tin of lacquer for what is a seldom used colour... surf green! It’s one of those custom colours that just doesn’t seem to get enough attention. But here it is an all its glory, draped over a lovely alder body and ready for some light ageing before going back to its owner. Are you thinking about refinishing your guitar? If you have a new factory that needs painted, that is also something that can be accommodated here at Golden Era. You can choose from a whole array of classic colours, metal flake or paper finishes. I love photography, but sometimes the process escapes me and I’m not able to capture the details on a body that I want to get. This reel is of Sebastian’s one piece swamp body finished in two tone sunburst nitro cellulose. And as you can see, there is no need to remove paint to show a guitar could have had a life. As I’ve always said, keeping the paint on the body while making it look 50/60/70 years old is the challenge. All being well this beauty hits the road on Wednesday to start making music with its new owner. The 1968 blue floral refinish is nearing completion! This 1968 Fender telecaster body will live again thanks to a fantastic repair carried out prior to my refinish. And isn’t that what this is all about? These beauties are meant to be played, heard and enjoyed. The paper finishes are so much fun to do and I’ve really enjoyed working on this one, The transformation of a piece like this is so inspiring and heartwarming for me. I’m always grateful to receive this type of project to work on. Just being able to breathe new life into something that will continue to be used to create music in the future makes tbis job so worthwhile. Well, I call it a “job”… but I don’t think I’ve really worked a day since starting this business! Anyway, happy fender Friday everyone and thank you for your continued support. As the algorithm continues to kill off the page reach I am humbled by the amount of new followers and fans that we receive on a daily basis. Building Olympic White over sunburst the slow way. This body started with a traditional sunburst base. Over that, I’m spraying a translucent white as a bar coat that will eventually become Olympic White. Before the white goes on, I’m using a void method to create subtle inconsistencies in the finish. These small variations allow the layers to be revealed , giving the guitar a more natural, broken-in character. Rather than forcing relic marks later, the idea is to build the finish in a way that lets the aging happen organically just like on the old ones.
