TUHere at Turtle Conservancy, we serve as the nonprofit sponsor for the @santaferiverturtleproject (SFRTP), which studies and conserves native turtles in this hotspot for freshwater turtle diversity.
Since the project’s founding in 2004 by Professor Jerry Johnson, over 12,000 turtles have been captured, examined, marked, and released through the collaborative effort of students, scientists, and hundreds of devoted volunteers.
This video was taken by Jack Thompson, a former TC intern and one of many volunteers that help with this project.
He began his involvement with the SFRTP in 2021, during his junior year of high school. Thompson is one of the remarkable participants who is responsible for both catching and collecting data on turtles during snorkel surveys.

SOWhy Would a Snapping Turtle Attack an Alligator? 😳🐢🐊

It looks insane at first — why would a slow turtle ever challenge a top predator like the American alligator? But in the wild, the behavior of the Alligator snapping turtle is driven by pure survival logic, not bravery.
First, snapping turtles are extremely defensive animals. When something large enters their space — especially in murky water — they don’t always recognize it as a gator. Their nervous system is wired for a simple rule: if it’s close and threatening, bite first.
Second, these turtles rely on ambush reflexes, not careful decision-making. Their strike is mostly automatic. Once triggered, the jaws slam shut in milliseconds. Many viral clips show what is basically a reflex misfire, not an intentional attack on a predator.
Third, territory matters. Large snapping turtles often sit motionless on the bottom for hours. If a young or curious alligator swims too close, the turtle interprets it as an intrusion and reacts instantly.
And finally — size context changes everything.
➡️ Against baby or juvenile gators, the turtle can absolutely injure them
➡️ Against full-grown adults, the alligator almost always has the advantage
➡️ Most encounters end quickly once the gator realizes what it bit into
In nature, animals aren’t calculating risks like humans. They’re running ancient survival programs built on reflex, territory, and split-second reactions.

A huge tilapia gets eaten by a large and blind common snapping turtle in a spring in Florida. At another spring, a large snapping turtle gets eaten by an American Alligator. It is always so interesting getting to film predation. Definitely looking to pursue more opportunities ro do so in the future

BRCapone the alligator snapping turtle got the chance to dine on a particularly unique meal (for him!): a whole chicken! His animal care team gave him the experience of "stumbling" across a carcass to encourage those instinctive behaviors of tearing and chomping at his food.
