BISnow leopards in the news, but not for a good reason.
Earlier this week, in northern China, a skier was attacked because she approached a wild snow leopard. She apparently tried to take a photo with the cat, and it attacked her, biting her face and/or neck. The cat then sat on her until help arrived, then ran off. Thankfully, the woman is going to be okay, but this is a great example of what NOT to do. Approaching a wild animal is never a good idea, especially an apex predator!
I think it’s likely this was a young animal in search of food, and it came to a lower elevations as a result, where it encountered the skier. I don’t think the cat was sick or injured, but I do suspect this selfie might not be real, because even snow leopards are not that chill! Either way, it is incredibly dangerous to approach a wild animal like this. The photo/selfie is NOT worth it.
Moral of the story: let’s love snow leopards from a distance 🥰

Videoaufnahmen zeigen, wie der Leopard plötzlich zuschnappt, sie zu Boden wirft und ihr ins Gesicht beißt, bevor er sich zurückzieht, während andere Skifahrer in der Nähe schreien und eingreifen. Die Behörden bestätigten später, dass das Tier nicht durch Fütterung provoziert wurde, sondern reagierte, nachdem die Frau die Warnhinweise für Wildtiere ignoriert hatte.
Lokale Medien berichteten, dass das Gesicht der Frau verletzt war und sie in ein Krankenhaus gebracht wurde. Ihr Zustand wurde als stabil bezeichnet; laut Angaben der Behörden verhinderte ihr Helm wahrscheinlich ihr Überleben. Der Vorfall ereignete sich trotz vorheriger Warnungen an Besucher, nachdem Tage zuvor Spuren von Schneeleoparden in dem Gebiet gefunden worden waren. Der Nationalpark blieb zum Zeitpunkt des Vorfalls geöffnet, was Kritik an der Durchsetzung der Regeln und der Besucherkontrolle hervorrief.
Wildtierexperten merkten an, dass Schneeleoparden nur selten Menschen angreifen; weltweit seien nur wenige Fälle dokumentiert, meist handelte es sich dabei um in die Enge getriebene Tiere. Im Nachgang berichteten einige chinesische Medien, der Leopard sei gefangen und eingeschläfert worden. Die Behörden gaben jedoch keine offizielle Stellungnahme zu seinem Schicksal ab, was bei Tierschützern Empörung auslöste. Sie argumentierten, das Tier habe in einem vom Menschen beeinflussten Lebensraum natürlich reagiert.
