If Pilates works your core in almost every exercise… shouldn’t it automatically decrease your belly fat? It’s one of the questions I hear a lot as a Pilates instructor. Pilates does build a very strong core. Almost every movement challenges the muscles that support your spine and pelvis — the deep abdominals, pelvic floor, diaphragm and the small stabilising muscles in your back. Over time this improves your posture, your ribcage–pelvis alignment, and the way your core activates throughout the day. That’s why many people notice their stomach looking more supported or “flatter” when they practice Pilates consistently. ✨ But core strength and belly fat aren’t the same thing. Pilates strengthens the muscles underneath. Fat loss is influenced by other things too — overall activity, nutrition, muscle mass, sleep, stress. What Pilates really does is build the foundation. It teaches your body how to stabilise, move with control, and use your core efficiently. And that foundation often makes every other type of training more effective. As an instructor, I see it all the time. When someone builds a strong Pilates foundation, everything else improves — their strength training, their posture, even the way they move in daily life. So Pilates will not magically get you abs but if you combine it with strength training, daily movement, healthy nutrition and enough sleep it can definitely help you to achieve realistic and sustainable results. It’s about building the kind of core strength that supports your body in everything you do.
