Understand somatic exercises for anxiety here 👇🏼 You might be thinking, how could something so simple help calm my anxiety? Because it isn’t about just washing your hands, or going for a walk - it’s about how these exercises are done with intention to create feelings of safety in the physical body. In turn this can break the circuit of anxiety, which normally looks like: noticing sensations of anxiety ➡️ becoming fixated on the uncomfortable sensations ➡️ feeling worried about what the sensations mean ➡️ anxious thoughts about feeling anxious in the future ↩️ and around we go. Rather than distracting our brain from the uncomfortable sensation of anxiety by mindless scrolling, Netflix, food etc, somatic exercises are designed to assist us to relax and regulate the nervous system by tuning in and becoming not only aware of the physical body, but also comfortable with the various sensations we may be feeling. Practising these types of exercises builds our window of tolerance for sensations of anxiety, because we come to realise that even if we feel dizzy, panicky, short of breath and so on, we are in fact, safe. In turn, the body receives cues of safety, which signals to the brain that it can relax on the fight or flight response and reduce the amount of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline that it’s pumping out.
