Using machines the wrong way is a bodybuilding tradition. And this one’s been around for a bit, but for some reason, it’s gone overlooked. The Sidewinder Split Squat—a Charles Glass deep cut brought back by Yumon Eaton—might be one of the most underrated ways to train your glutes using this machine, and the only way we know of to train in such a uniquely glute-dominant position. We didn’t invent it. We’re just showing you how to actually use it. Here’s the How: • Upper back locked into the pad, body turned sideways. You should feel your outer hip stretched, not your back. • Outside leg planted = working glute. Plant your feet so that your shin can stay directly above your foot the whole time. Neutral shin. • Once planted, give a little extra rotational emphasis into that glute • Sit into a controlled stretch and drive straight back up • No knee collapse, no forward drift That’s it. When you get this right, it stops feeling like a split squat… and starts feeling like a sledgehammer to your glutes. Deep stretch. Stable environment for load. Consistent tension. These Old school bodybuilding hacks are as brutally effective today as they were then. You just gotta be tough enough to do them.

I’ve been seeing this split squat variation on the hack squat machine all over my feed, so I finally decided to give it a try and WOW, I absolutely loved it 😍 With your torso facing slightly forward and your lower body in a lateral position, that tiny twist completely shifts the focus onto your glutes. I didn’t feel it anywhere else. My glutes were instantly activated from the very first rep. If you remember that Bulgarian split squat variation I tried a while back where you twist slightly to the side instead of just moving straight up and down, this feels just like that, except on the hack squat machine. This variation is definitely making its way into my glute-day programming from now on. 🎯 SPLIT PENDULUM SQUAT TIPS 👇 1️⃣ Back foot does not help! Similar to a dumbbell split squat, but it’s even easier with the support around you in the pendulum squat machine to limit the use your back leg. 2️⃣ I’d suggest mastering standard (two-leg) pendulum squats before using these. All basic cues for those apply. But for your split stance you’ll want to take your working leg a little more central on the platform. Positions will vary a little individually, but go with whatever feels best as you travel through the motion. 3️⃣ Start without any weight - Serioussly, the first time you try these you might be surprised how little you can lift. It’s humbling. Some pendulum squat machines are harder than others. You may even need to counter-load yours (if it’s an option). If you like the benefits of machines, but also looking to include some of the benefits you’ll get through single-leg training, then split pendulum squats are right up imho. Hope this helped.
