“I recently started buying flowers for myself during my regular grocery runs. Flowers were always and only purchased for special occasions, and never for myself, but for others. It never made sense to add it to my grocery list and most importantly, it wasn’t necessary. Neither were the wine or chips or cookie dough I had in my basket… but somehow it made it to the register. I never really thought twice about these impulse buys and found every reason to justify why I deserved it. Then I heard a quote the other day from the Drew Barrymore show and this concept has stuck with me ever since, and quite literally has changed my life. A floral designer was a guest on the show and was asked what the secret was in making flowers last as long as possible. To which he responded, ‘Flowers are not supposed to last. Their job is to help us to stay in the present. They grow, they blossom, they thrive and then they’re gone. You have to stay in the present. You have to stop. You have to be in the moment. Otherwise you’re gonna blink and they’re gonna be gone.’ So I started buying flowers for myself. It made it to the grocery list. Not an impulse buy, not an afterthought. Perfectly intentional, perfectly present. Also can’t help but to keep smelling the flowers! My apartment smells divine. 🌷✨” It’s an understatement to say navigating life after a cancer diagnosis is hard. There is just so much you are holding and faced with. Here’s a midweek reminder to do something for yourself that brings you joy. Treat yourself to something sweet. You deserve that. Quarterly treatment for stage 4 metastatic cancer. After the hugs and catching up, my doctor paused and said, “It’s been about four years.” Four years ago I was at my PCP’s getting checked out for a clogged duct I thought I couldn’t get unclogged. Four years ago I didn’t have the label of breast cancer. Four years. Four years was my original prognosis. I remember hearing that timeline so clearly… feeling like the ground dropped beneath me. I thought, if this stat- MY given stat is true, I won’t even see Sophia make it to kindergarten. And now… here I am. Four years later. Feeling healthier, stronger, centered. I am not a statistic and refuse to be one. It’s a strange place to live… this space between two realities. One where life feels almost “normal,” where the medications, routines and treatments have become part of my everyday rhythm. And another reality where I’m still very much in the cancer world where scans, vigilance and uncertainty quietly exist in the background. My team has always said, “At five years, we send holiday cards. We loosen the reins.” That milestone feels both hopeful and so surreal. For now, we stay in surveillance; low dose chemo, heavy minerals, homeopathics… watching closely, caring for my whole body, honoring what it’s been through. With a high BRCA2 and a system that needs to work extra hard to detox, staying aware is how we move forward. Grateful to be here. Holding both realities at once. Still walking this road, one season at a time. ❤️

I *have* felt frozen and traumatized this year by grief. The things that keep me awake, though, are why it had to happen at all. These people meant a lot to me and in a world of cancer where a lot of people are so tired and scared of losing friends that they stop making new friends, these friends who became metastatic and passed away this year messaged me almost daily and became constants in a life that is often chaotic and unfair. Yes, I understand the MBC Community wanting to de-stigmatize MBC and show us in happy moments. But there is room for every bit of our human emotions and experience…I have lots of beauty in my life, but I still find it so hard to accept that people I talked to every week are just gone. Let me tell you a little bit about what these 3 incredible women did: Katie Greenwood Ross, 33, created more art in multiple formats than almost any artist I’ve ever seen under the moniker Thistle Thistle. She made historically sound costumes, a long popular line of hand-carved jewelry and wares, clothing patterns that she gifted to her community, music that was beautiful and heartfelt. Miniature houses and furniture for dolls including hand making tiny beeswax candles for a chandelier. She was a pillar for under represented communities and causes. It’s hard to summarize someone so beautiful, so these are just a couple things that popped up in my mind to share about Katie. Yuko Wada, cardiology PHD researcher and my beloved friend. In her time in the US, she published over 60 research works with 725 citations. She was a research instructor of genetic medicine and clinical pharmacology at Vanderbilt University. Before she came to the US, she was a doctor of cardiology and internal medicine in Japan. Incredibly bright, funny, and an avid rock climber, Yuko went out of her way to give me her number through a mutual friend. She remembered almost every single one of my chemo appointments and texted me after them to check on me. She was so much more than a cancer patient and she hiked something like 15 miles a month before her passing. After receiving her fifth cancer diagnosis, Susie Lee, @iamsusielee, wasn’t prepared to hear it was metastatic. While there is currently no cure for metastatic breast cancer, Susie said she supports research because it will improve existing therapies and find new ones that are easier to endure. Susie remains hopeful as #ResearchMovesUsForward through better outcomes and unprecedented breakthroughs. This #GivingTuesday, help BCRF fund more research for people like Susie by donating at BCRF.org and at the link in bio.

“But you are just doing so well!”…. but am I really??? 😂 Basically at least once I day “I loose my sh🐒t.” No joke. The emotional energy needed to just function and get out of bed is a lot! Basically I have to psyche myself up to try to take on the day which will eventually lead me to: •overwhelm •anxiety •frustration •anger •feelings of helplessness •fatigue •sadness •fear And these are all on a “good day” , bad days are just a whole other post😂 It is just to show that people dealing with this disease can have so much more going on under the surface than you might think. Yes treatments and all that are hard but the day-to-day living with this mentally is what really tests your limits. How close are you to “loosing your sh*t”?

Thanks @kangell82 for this accurate video of scanxiety in action. 😫💗 “Scan result days got me like.... Ugh the scanxiety has been running HIGH this week. A week ago I was coming back from vacation and then BAM...it's back to the regular programming of that #mbclife I've been dealing with chronic headaches since my diagnosis and had another CT of my head and neck this week which kicked my nerves into high gear. It's a rollercoaster of emotions going in for each scan, trying to give myself a pep talk that everything's gonna be OK while also preparing myself for the worst. This emotional shield trying to protect me from what's to come. The moment I walk into my doctors office, I'm scanning everyone's faces, trying to figure out if it's good news or bad news. Are they avoiding eye contact with me? Have they seen my results? What is HAPPENING?! You suddenly become a psychology major trying to analyze every mannerism and facial expression. The doctor comes in and she seems cheery. OK this must be good. And then carries on with our appointment as I'm about to burst and say "what about the scan?!?!" Oh ya, everything is clear! I meant to tell you as soon as I walked in🤦‍♀️ Gahhhhh!!!” 🏷 #scanxiety #scans #breastcancer #breastcancerthriver #breastcancerwarrior #breastcancercare #breastcancersupport #breastcancercommunity #cancercommunity #cancerthriver #mbc #metastatic #metastaticbreastcancer #metastaticcancer #stage4 #stage4cancer #stage4needsmore #yourstorymatters #breastie #thriver #itsoktonotbeok #stage4breastcancer #rethinkmbc #metsmonday

Last week, we had the honor of bringing MBC Thriver Breasties to SABCS. 💜
From attending panels and supporting the Breasties booth to leading a powerful IG Live with @drteplinsky, Thrivers showed up with one clear purpose: to make sure lived experience is part of the conversation. Every December, researchers, clinicians, and patient advocates gather in Texas for the world’s largest breast cancer research meeting. This year, Thrivers made one thing loud and clear — the experiences and quality of life of people living with metastatic breast cancer matter. Why Thrivers need a seat at the table isn’t theoretical. It’s essential. Read the full article on The Peak:
