one of my favorite substacks this year came from an article called, “date someone who is interested in you.” after some of my own relationships ending this year, and hearing about a few of my friends’ relationships ending in their lives, i come back to this audio from one tree hill. it leaves me with this deep desire to be heard and seen for what’s beneath the surface.
in the loneliness epidemic of our 20s, we are often complacent with who we keep around, as long as it keeps us codependent and not alone. yet, when you look beyond the surface of the synthetic “i love you,” does that person put in genuine effort to see you? whether it be your romantic partner or a friend, does that person try to continuously get to know you? and do you try to do that for them? love doesn’t easily die down if you continuously keep curiosity and compassion alive.
this audio replicates so much of the heartache many of my friends and i have felt this year. the premise leaves us with the truth that — keeping someone around doesn’t mean you want them in your life. effort, curiosity, and compassion do.

VIThe history of #photography
began with the discovery of two critical principles: The first is camera obscura image projection, the second is the discovery that some substances are visibly altered by exposure to light[2]. There are no artifacts or descriptions that indicate any attempt to capture images with light sensitive materials prior to the 18th century.

Around 1717, Johann Heinrich Schulze used a light-sensitive slurry to capture images of cut-out letters on a bottle. However, he did not pursue making these results permanent. Around 1800, Thomas Wedgwood made the first reliably documented, although unsuccessful attempt at capturing camera images in permanent form. His experiments did produce detailed photograms, but Wedgwood and his associate Humphry Davy found no way to fix these images.
In 1826, Nicéphore Niépce first managed to fix an image that was captured with a camera, but at least eight hours or even several days of exposure in the camera were required and the earliest results were very crude. Niépce's associate Louis Daguerre went on to develop the daguerreotype process, the first publicly announced and commercially viable photographic process. The daguerreotype required only minutes of exposure in the camera, and produced clear, finely detailed results. On August 2, 1839 Daguerre demonstrated the details of the process to the Chamber of Peers in Paris. On August 19 the technical details were made public in a meeting of the Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Fine Arts in the Palace of Institute. (For granting the rights of the inventions to the public, Daguerre and Niépce were awarded generous annuities for life.)[3][4][5] When the metal based daguerreotype process was demonstrated formally to the public, the competitor approach of paper-based calotype negative and salt print processes invented by William Henry Fox Talbot was already demonstrated in London (but with less publicity).[5] Subsequent innovations made photography easier and more versatile.

CLAcross the animal kingdom, humans aren’t the only ones known to experiment with mind-altering substances.
In rare observations, dolphins have been seen gently handling pufferfish, carefully passing them between one another for extended periods rather than treating them as prey. When threatened, pufferfish release a powerful defensive toxin. In very small doses, this chemical appears to induce a trance-like, disoriented state in dolphins that come into contact with it.
The deliberate and controlled way the dolphins interact with the pufferfish suggests this behavior isn’t accidental. Instead, it points to experimentation, awareness, and social learning, qualities we often reserve for ourselves.
