A disconnect switch (Isolator) is one of the key devices in high-voltage substations and transmission lines. Its main function is to open and close the circuit under no-load conditions.
Main applications of disconnect switches:
1. Isolating equipment
During maintenance, repair, or testing of equipment (such as transformers, lines, or circuit breakers), the disconnect switch separates the circuit from the rest of the network to ensure personnel safety.
2. Providing visible isolation
Disconnect switches are usually designed so that after opening, the operator can see the air gap between the blades and be sure that the current path is interrupted.
3. Facilitating switching operations
A disconnect switch cannot interrupt load current or fault current by itself, but works in combination with a circuit breaker:
First, the circuit breaker interrupts the current.
Then, the disconnect switch opens to provide mechanical isolation.
4. Safety and operational flexibility in the network
With the help of disconnect switches, part of a substation or line can be taken out of service for maintenance without shutting down the entire network.

🔑 Important note:
A disconnect switch must never be opened or closed under load (except for a special type called a load-break switch), because it cannot interrupt current and may cause arcing and severe damage.
