My top 5 tips for darning knits! 🪡🧵 This was inspired by Ali @incredibusy @sogoodineveryway #sgiew 1. Use a mending disc, darning egg, or darnish mushroom, a book. It's important to use the right tool. -> A darning mushroom is appropriate for a sock heel but not necessarily for a flat area. The appropriate tool will help keep your work in place and prevent you from darning through to the other side. (darning a sleeve shut isn't that much fun 😅) ---------- 2. Always darn a bigger area than the hole itself. ->This will ensure the darn will last longer as less pressure will be applied to the edges of the hole itself ----------- 3. Use a fiber from the same vgroup' as the original fabric. For example: wool and cashmere Viscose and cotton, or linen -> So the patch can react in a similar way to the item once washed (and not become looser or felt for example) ------------ 4. For my style I match the thread thickness to how wide the stitches are. In this video the thread i used is slightly too thin. -> The patch will be more denseli woven and opaque so you can't see the hole. It will also make it less prone to snagging. ----------- 5. Weave with the eye of the needle first. -> The needle is less likely to go through the yarn as you weave making undoing your work easier. ~~~~~~~~ Want to know more? The Rapid Darner works slightly differently to the Speedweve - the hooks at the top move up and down instead of left to right. This means that when the weft rows are worked you'll be going over and under two threads each time and not one. I mimicked that with the weft threads to create this basket weave darn by only alternating the hooks every second row. Note: I bought the Rapid darner on eBay and the Speedweve in a vintage shop both several years ago. Practice is an essential part of learning any skill, and probably doesn’t get talked about enough. No one is perfect when they learn something new! My new (bigger and better) materials kit to go with my book will allow you to practice the darning, swiss darning and cuffs and edges repair techniques in the book before starting to mend your favourite sweaters. This kit includes 2 knitted fabrics in different weights, one with a ribbed edge for practicing cuff/edge repairs. Its thicker weight makes it ideal for practicing reconstructing fabric using Swiss darning too. The kit also includes 10 colours of darning wool, 1 needle and one latch needle, ideal for picking up stitches. There are smaller kits available to go with the book too. Just follow the link in my bio to order. All the materials are knitted and wound by hand in my studio. I was so curious because I’m always up to trying something new when it comes to marking the fabric, which is the most important thing when you Sashiko 🪡🧵📏 Anywho! I tried it and it worked like a charm! 🙌✨ You can sharpen the bar of soap very easily during the process to keep these fine lines, it slides very smoothly on the fabric and it disappears easily when your iron it or wash it! 🫧 Plus is smells super nice 🥰 I’ve been so excited and surprised about this hack that I wanted to share it with you 🫶 Did you guys know about this already?
