Real change starts in the nervous system. When you tap on acupressure points while using focused affirmations, you send calming signals to the brain, and the science backs it up! A study by Dr. Peta Stapleton, published in 2020 in the Journal of Psychological Trauma found that EFT Tapping lowered cortisol levels by 43%. In a randomized, controlled trial, cortisol levels were measured via the saliva of participants before and after treatment with either EFT, psychoeducation, or resting. Each group received treatment for 60 minutes and cortisol was measured in their saliva before and after. The EFT Tapping group had a 43% drop in cortisol, while the psychoeducation group only had a 19% drop (and the resting group showed a 2% increase). I used to be skeptical of EFT until I understood how it works in the brain. EFT works by calming the nervous system while the brain is processing a stressful thought or memory, allowing the brain to reconsolidate the memory with less emotional charge. When something feels stressful, the brain’s alarm system (the amygdala) switches on. EFT uses gentle tapping on specific acupuncture points while you focus on the issue, sending calming sensory signals back to the brain. This is called bottom-up regulation - the body calming the brain, not thinking your way out of it. Because the body is calm while the memory is active, the brain learns it doesn’t need to react the same way anymore. Repetition strengthens this new response. Sleep locks it in. Same memory.
