HA5 Seconds From Death
On September 11, 2001, 26-year-old Lena Carter was on her way to work at the World Trade Center. She was steps away from the entrance when she ducked into a small corner shop to grab a bottle of water.
Behind the counter stood Omar Hassan, the shop’s owner. As Lena reached for her wallet, a deafening roar tore across the sky. Omar looked up, instincts kicking in.
“Get down!” he shouted.
He vaulted over the counter and pulled her behind a heavy storage rack.
Seconds later, September 11 attacks began with a violent explosion as the first plane struck the North Tower. Glass and debris blasted through the street right where Lena had been standing moments before.
The shop windows shattered. Smoke and dust swallowed everything.
But Lena was alive.
Five seconds later, she could have been another name etched into the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
Instead, she walked away because one shopkeeper looked up at the right moment.
