Well right after making my other video about tube worms, and the casings that have been washing up on the beach, I found some red trumpet tube worms in some tidepools! This is essentially a worm that lives in a tube, with a flower for a mouth! The beautiful flower is used to trap particles or plankton in the water which is then draws in and eats. When calm and in the water their little flowery mouths may be exposed but when startled, they pull them in quickly for protection. Night tide pooling is a completely different way to see the intertidal zone. Many animals and critters including sea stars, anemones, crabs, are more active at night. Plus you get to see areas that are usually underwater. The best tides for this are super low tides, -1 to -2 ft when the water has dropped below normal, exposing more rocks and pools, so you can reach species that normally hide. Low tides happen when the moon and sun align (new or full moon), and if that low tide happens after dark, it’s perfect for night tide pooling. How to do it responsibly: 🌙 Check tide charts for a negative low tide after sunset 🔦 Bring a headlamp and/or flashlight 🪨 Step carefully and never flip rocks 🤲 Look, don’t touch 🌊 Leave everything exactly as you found it and practice Leave No Trace 💕 Night tide pooling is a beautiful reminder of how fragile and intricate coastal ecosystems are and all that is hiding from the untrained eye.
