Day 51 of building a new mobile game in Unity every day. Today I worked on using scriptable objects to encapsulate content. I split my game into two parts, the game systems, and the content. I was able to make the content completely scalable from the game engine without needing any code changes by using scriptable objects to hold the content - in this case the colors and actions. #gaming #programming #gamedev #indiegames #unity3d

Day 55 of building a new mobile game in Unity every day. Today's game took 3 hours to complete, and I did it all in one sitting. The time breakdown today was: 5 minutes for the idea 10 minutes for the blockout 30 minutes for mechanics 45 minutes for the UI interactions an hour for the visuals 15 minutes for sound effects 20 minutes for music The slowest parts were the UI, because I used flags to manage game state instead of an enum, and art because I am still not too familiar with 9 sliced sprites. The fastest parts were the mechanics because I used MVVM and dependency injection so I could code super quickly, and the idea because I've had this concept kicking around in the back of my mind for a while. This was my first time using DI, I think it solves many of the issues I've had using singletons and static classes. The combination of MVVM and DI made the architecture so clean. I'm looking forward to using it in a 3d game where game objects have more agency, I'm curious what it will look like. #programming #gamedev #gamedevelopment #indiegames #unity3d

Day 59 of building a new mobile game in Unity every day. After making several mechanically focused games, I really wanted to make one focused on vibes. Ideally a game should have both, but I often don't have time. I love when games have some emergent aspect, when the finished game is more than the sum of the parts. Shaders often have that feel for me, and 3d too. I think one aspect that lets me develop games fast is that I'm open to discovery, I like to explore and I'm open to changing my vision - I don't need to be in complete control. #gaming #programming #gamedev #indiedev #unity3d

Day 57 of building a new mobile game in Unity every day. Today I think I nailed the MVVM architecture. I tried using the command queue to sync the animations and gameplay together. I also had a fairly complex stare machine this time. I pulled out the color quantization from my CRT shader, I think it looks great by itself. I'm pleased with how much I could do in 3 hours! #gaming #programming #gamedev #indiedev #unity3d

Day 56 of building a new mobile game in Unity every day. This game was pretty rough. I couldn't think of an idea, so I spent the morning refactoring my code from yesterday. I improved the ViewModel base class so it's not automatically published, I added a read only interface to my observables so UI has no access to modify them, and I built a finite state machine. I still couldn't think of something, so I just started recording and this is what I ended up with. It's not very good, but it's progress. #programming #gamedev #gamedevelopment #indiegames #unity3d
