A bit more from my research into Cornish merfolk and similar folklore from around the world. Like dragons, there is barely a place on the map that does not hold stories of aquatic humanoids, beings who more often than not inspire fear in those standing on the shore or travelling across dark water. One such creature is the Qalupalik. In Inuit mythology, the Qallupilluit are said to inhabit the Arctic coastlines, hiding near ice floes and waiting for children who stray too close to the water’s edge. As with many old warnings woven into folklore, the legend likely served a vital purpose, protecting the young from unstable ice, freezing seas, and a landscape that can turn deadly in seconds. They are often described as having green, slimy skin, long hair, long fingernails, and webbed hands, sometimes marked by scales or fins. The Qalupalik is said to wear an amautik, a traditional Inuit parka, and in some tellings it is used to carry abducted children away beneath the ice. Certain versions speak of a paralysing shriek, or an eerie, ethereal humming used to lure victims closer. Some even claim the creature can alter its appearance through a technique known as pilutitaminik. Accounts differ on what becomes of the taken children. In some versions they are devoured. In others they are kept in a suspended, stasis like state, preserving the youth of the being that captured them. There are faint echoes here of sirens, even harpy like qualities, yet the heart of the story feels rooted in something practical and protective. This is a clip from a 2010 animated short is a powerful modern interpretation of the legend by Ame Papatsie and the Nunavut Animation Lab, created in partnership with the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation and the National Film Board of Canada. It captures the atmosphere of the myth beautifully. #darkfolklore #darkcornwall #darkcornwallstudio #merfolk #inuitmythology

Varnûl “The mire remembereth the living, and maketh of them beasts.” Varnûl lieth in the heart of Ishuraeth, a land cast out from the memory of men, where no light endures and no mercy dwelleth. Whether kingdoms once stood upon that continent none can say, for all is now ruin, and the hand of evil hath claimed it utterly. In the oldest of holy texts, Ishuraeth is named not as a nation, but as a curse — a place where the wicked are sent in death, and where the living trespass only by divine error or dreadful fate. There, in the drowned hollows of Varnûl, the mire is deep and foul, and it devoureth the flesh of the living. Yet death doth not follow. For the swamp is a forge of torment: the bodies of men are twisted into beasts without thought, without speech, without will. And within these cursed shells, the souls remain — awake, aware, and weeping. They watch through the eyes of monsters, unable to act, bound in silence and pain. Not until the creature’s body faileth may the soul be loosed from its prison. Thus are the wanderers of Varnûl made into vessels of suffering, and the swamp into a tomb that hath no rest. Let no man seek it. Let no map bear its name. For Varnûl is not a place of exile, but of judgment. #horror #midjourney #scary #halloween #AIShorts

READ CAPTION ⬇️ The Rusalka is a Slavic water spirit said to rise from rivers at night. Often described as the ghost of a young woman who died in sorrow, she laughs between the trees and dances near the shore. Men who follow her are pulled into the water… or found later pale and silent. In old villages, children were warned not to swim alone in spring. Some call it myth. Others call it a warning. #Rusalka #SlavicFolklore #WaterSpirit #DarkMythology #EasternEuropeanMyths
